About the Wine

The Antinori family legacy in Tuscany is well known with wines that define the Super-Tuscan category, such as Tignanello and Solaia. The also make a Super-Pugliese wine down in the heel of the boot. The secret is that this wine sells for small money by comparison. This well-crafted, organic, quality wine will light up any weekend evening. Intense ruby red in color, the 2012 Trentangeli has intense aromas of cherry and berry fruit as well as expressing slight spice. On the palate, it is warm and rich with excellent structure and persistence in the finish.

At 34% off, this wine belongs in the category of, "Honey, what should we drink tonight?"

You can't go wrong with "thirty angels".

  • Blend: 70% Aglianico, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah
  • Trentangeli means “thirty angels,” a religious reference to the angels that accompany the sun from sunrise to sunset, and thus also accompany the shepherds during their days of work.

Reviews

A red with a wonderful depth of fruit and richness that shows mineral, stone and dark-fruit character. Full-bodied, silky and very long. Complex yet subtle Bordeaux blend. Drink now. ~91pts, JS

Made with organic fruit, the 2012 Castel del Monte Trentangeli is a "super Puglian" blend of 70% Aglianico, 20% Cabernet and 10% Syrah. This is a persuasive and compelling wine with pretty tones of wet earth and terra-cotta followed by opulent ripe fruit, spice, bacon fat, blackberry preserves, candied plum, rum cake and Indian spice. The wine exhibits an international slant with pretty oak layers that are fitting and well integrated. I recommend it enthusiastically, especially for near-term drinking.

I need to make a special callout to Vito Palumbo, manager of Marchesi Antinori's Puglia estate Tormaresca and "Mr. Puglia" in person. Few have championed the Puglia wine identity more articulately and more passionately than Vito Palumbo. Tuscany's Antinori family invested in Puglia in 1999. This ground-breaking winery subsequently brought a wave of new investments and hot-climate winemaking technology to the boot of Italy. The Tormaresca experiment has not always been an easy one. Despite the many ups and downs (including difficult vintages), Vito continues to be an inspiration for the many new faces that are now blossoming in the wake of Tormaresca's birth. ~ 91+, WA
