About the Wine

This is a traditional Vin Santo made in extremely small quantities every year. Perfect to accompany practically any dessert, and built to age. Everyone needs a little dessert wine in their collection, and this is the perfectly versatile sweet wine in the perfect size. The Capezzana estate dabbles in a little bit of everything including cooking, these wines were built to showcase your dessert!

Cappezzana has a long storied history dating back to the 800s with a written dated wine order to prove it. The estate has passed through a handful of families including the Medici, and even the Rothschild family prior to the current owners. Today the Conti Bonacossi family runs the estate, after purchasing the property in 1925. This just happened to be the same year the Vin Santo was first produced. Everything about this winery alludes to tradition, the extensive antique and art collection, and even the winemaking.

Aging: Fermented and aged in small chestnut and cherrywood casks

Tasting Notes: 90% Trebbiano 10% San Colombano. Quite a complex nose, fruity, with dried fruit and candied apricot and orange peels with yellow floral nuances. The palate is sweet, soft, and opulent, showcasing the candied fruit flavors.

Reviews

The 2011 Vin Santo di Carmignano Riserva (packaged in a 375-millilter bottle) is a blend of 90% Trebbiano and 10% San Colombano, another name for the white grape Verdea. I tasted bottle number 3,614 of only 5,264 bottles produced. This is a beautiful and seemingly indestructible dessert wine that offers intense tones of dried apricot, honey, and toasted nut. The grapes are air-dried for up to six months, and the wine ages in traditional 100-liter oak barrels called caratelli for up to six years. Those pretty nutty flavors you get on the finish come directly from the aging process. ~95 Wine Advocate
