Turley Wine Cellars makes forty-seven wines from over fifty vineyards, the vast majority of which are single vineyards designated Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards, in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture. All of their vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or in the certification process. They use all-natural yeasts in the fermentations. Turley aims to be the stewards of California’s most historic vineyards, producing distinctive wines that reflect their heritage.
This Zinfandel is composed of a variety of old sites from California that are either too small to be made into a vineyard-designated wine or are “new” to the Turley family (and way of farming). Vines are anywhere from 50 to 130 years old, and a true representation of California's old vine Zinfandel, hailing from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador, and Paso Robles. There is no better way to gauge the classic character of old-vine Zinfandel in California than through this wine.
Aging: in 80% used oak barriques, of which 80% are French (the rest American) for 15-18 months.
100% Zinfandel. Aromatically the wine has a nose full of juicy dark cherries, blackberries, just ripened raspberries, and some savory thanksgiving spices. On the palate there are notes of salty dried meats as well as brambly fruits paired with silken tannins.
A jammy bomb of fruit, offering cherry pie and ripe raspberry flavors accented with toasty spice and briar notes as this energetic Zin zips along the zesty finish. ~93 Wine Spectator,#14 Top 100 2024
