Their vineyards are distributed throughout 5 different regions around Sicily:Menfi, Etna, Vittoria, Noto, and Capo Milazzo, resulting in an incredibly interesting wine portfolio: Different soils, different climates, different grapes, different (and incredible) wines! And if that wasn't enough, the family also owns a hotel and a restaurant in Menfi and Palermo.
For Planeta, sustainability is of the utmost importance, winemaking practices and viticulture are done in accordance with the environment and society. Baronia is considered a symbol of the sustainable viticulture of Planeta’s Winery.
Aging: Fermented and aged in French oak, 40% new, for a minimum of 12 months.
100% Chardonnay. A pure expression of Chardonnay executed in a beautifully Burgundian style, complete with a sunny Sicilian twist. The wine shows precision and focus, yet it offers a generous array of stone fruit and floral aromas along the way. As the wine takes on more weight in the glass, it begins to reveal rounder and more opulent tones of Sicilian almond, candied fruit, orange peel, anise seed, and salty mineral tones that recall the soft sea breezes that wash gently over Menfi in the southern part of the island.
The nose presents a luscious swirl of vanilla and pineapple, with undertones of salted butter emphasizing the succulence, but a whiff of tulips for levity. The pineapple keeps strutting on the palate, but notes of lemon and apple, plus a nuttier saltiness, provide balance through the finish. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
Aromas of grilled lemons and candied pineapple with hints of honeysuckle, caramel and pastry crust. Full and creamy with rich, layered fruit and some salty notes to it. A little oily and dense. Long finish. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
Shows a sweet, smoky waft of canelé as an enticing entry point, quickly transitioning on the palate to reveal a clean-cut, focused mix of ripe apple and yellow plum fruit, mandarin orange peel, salted almond and ground ginger notes that linger on the finish. Drink now through 2031. 16,667 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator
One of Sicily's most famous white wines, Planeta Chardonnay has been produced in the village of Menfi since 1995. It's modern in style, fermented and aged in French oak, 40% new, for a minimum of 12 months. This latest release has quite tropical notes of pineapple, melon and warm peach stone fruit, white flowers, some juicy citrus and a vanilla spice aspect from the oak. Powerful but with elegance. ~91 Decanter
