Trentino-Alto Adige is located in Northern Italy. This beautiful wine region that borders Switzerland and Austria, is surrounded by part of the Dolomite mountains. This scenic area is a mecca for skiers, hikers, cyclists, and lovers of amazing cuisine that is influenced by the Austro-Hungarian history in NE Italy. Thanks to its high-altitude vineyards, unique climate conditions that are highly influenced by the Dolomite Mountains, and the closeness to the Adige River, this region is blessed with an outstanding terroir. A terroir that delivers, in James Suckling’s words, “extremely bright and fresh wines that offer extraordinary value without breaking the bank.”
One of the native grapes from Alto Adige is Lagrein. This grape is a descendant of Teroldego and is related to Syrah, Pinot noir, and Dureza. This rare variety delivers elegant, full-bodied wines with beautiful acidity. Inky purple in color, you would think the wine would be heavy in the mouth. But, it's not. It's medium bodied and dancing in the mouth due to the natural acidity. Elegant notes of violet, mocha, and blackberry carry through in the mouth.
One of the best producers of this unique grape is Elena Walch's estate. This family-owned winery is composed of more than 140 acres placed in some of the best areas of Alto Adige, including Caldaro and Tramin. Elena (founder and owner) has a great sense of responsibility for the environment. Both the vineyard and cellar are managed with sustainable practices.
If you're an adventurer and keen on discovering the world of wine, you don't want to miss this wine. This elegant and unique red will enchant you from the very first sip. On top of the outstanding quality, the 2021 vintage looks to be a very good year for Trentino-Alto Adige's wines, Vinous Media said that this year “shows a lot of promise."
Tasting Notes: 100% Lagrein. This beautiful wine has a complex bouquet that captivates with discreet spicy aromas, with cocoa together with wild berries and sweet cherries in the background. Distinctive tannin structure, smooth fullness, playful yet rustic elegance, and youthful freshness as well as a long, juicy finish classify the palate. Incredibly food friendly, pair this wine with venison, game, red meat and mature cheeses
