About the Wine

Don Melchor is an icon of Chilean wine in the world and one of the best references of Cabernet Sauvignon worldwide. Positioned for more than 9 vintages as one of the “100 Best Wines in the World" and for more than 5 vintages within the "Top 10 Best Wines of the World" according to Wine Spectator and James Suckling. If you want to taste the greatness and the beauty of the narrowest country in the world, 2018 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto is the one!

It all started in 1883, when Don Melchor de Concha y Toro planted vines in Maipo Valley, in Pirque, just right at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Don Melchor had a dream of creating some of the best Chilean wines, and he succeeded. Concha y Toro is not only recognized worldwide for its high-quality wines, but also as the largest wine producer in all Latin America and one of the main producers worldwide.

The release of the first vintage of Don Melchor in 1987, was a watershed in the quality of Chilean wine. Chilean wine began to resonate worldwide, showing that Chile had great potential to produce high-quality wines. In 1992, just 5 years later, Don Melchor was positioned as one of the best wines in the world according to Wine Spectator. To date, Don Melchor continues to be ranked as one of the best Chilean wines in the world, and with constant ratings of 90+ Points by the world's most acclaimed critics.

Don Melchor's wines are made by the winemaker Enrique Tirado, who works hand in hand with Jacques Boissenot and his son Eric Boissenot. “Don Melchor is for me the constant search for the best expression of each of the vines within the vineyard, in order to achieve in each harvest, the beauty of the balance of the Puente Alto terroir," Enrique says.

The vineyard of more than 300 acres to produce Don Melchor wines, is located in the Alto Maipo Valley. Thanks to its perfect climate conditions, its soils, and the landscape of the beautiful Andes Mountains, (which looks like something taken out of a Disney movie), Alto Maipo is one of the most privileged wine-growing areas in the whole country.

2018 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 72% new and 28% second use.

Tasting Notes: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. The wine shows lots of expression and complexity of small red fruits, as well as floral notes displayed as a whole. On the palate, the wine is full of favor and dominated by elegance and balance, as well as a great texture of the tannins, with a long, refined finish. Pair this wine with meat and wild game. Cow and goat cheeses; dry and mature cheeses, or creamy cheeses.

Reviews

This is amazing. The vibrancy and energy in this wine is stunning. The complexity of aromas are breathtaking with flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries, and peaches. Full-bodied, yet ever so refined and polished with impeccable texture and beauty. The length is marvelous. This is a testimony to balance, harmony and transparency in a great red.Drink after 2023. ~100 Points, James Suckling

2018 is rightly regarded as one of the best Chilean red wine vintages of the last 30 years, so it’s no surprise that the latest release of Don Melchor is so special.Made from 181 lots covering 151 different vineyard parcels, it’s a pure, refined expression of the Andes-cooled Puente Alto terroir. This is only the second time that the blend has included all four Bordeaux varieties on the estate – it’s 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot – and the wine is suitably nuanced and well balanced. Scented and floral, with some wild herb top notes, it’s an icon that marries energy with power and grip. The tannins are polished, the fruit intense, with cassis and red berry flavors complemented by fresh acidity and scented coffee bean oak. ~98 Points, Tim Atkin

~98 Points, Descorchados.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor is a combination of a proven style – the blend also includes 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot – and a particularly good harvest in the Puente Alto region in Maipo. Made by Enrique Tirado and aged for 15 months in French barrels, it is garnet red in the glass, with a very complex expression that unfolds in layers, beginning with black currant and sour cherry notes, followed by mint, cedar and pepper and a faint whiff of red pepper. Juicy in the mouth with fine-grained tannins and a concentration that centers the wine, channeling and stretching out the fruity backdrop, this is an unusually harmonious and delicious Bordeaux blend. ~96 Points, Vinous.

Powerful and well-structured, with vibrant acidity backing a lively blend of dark fruit and fresh-crushed cooking spice flavors. Cedary and savory notes in the midpalate, with a long finish filled with underbrush accents. Drink now through 2027. ~95 Points, Wine Spectator.
