San Rafael, located in the heart of Mendoza province, Argentina, is a prominent wine region known for its rich viticultural history and diverse climate. Although situated a bit south of Mendoza’s main wine regions, San Rafael's vineyards span nearly 22,000 hectares. The region benefits from its semi-arid climate, nourished by snowmelt from the Andes, which provides ample water for irrigation. The sandy, alluvial soils here are ideal for producing high-quality grapes.

Algodon Wine Estates, nestled in this picturesque region, is a celebrated destination that combines luxury living with exceptional wine production. Originally a private vineyard dating back to 1946, the estate was transformed in 2002 by José Jurado's grandson and further expanded in 2007 by the U.S.-based Algodon Wines & Luxury Development Group.

Today, Algodon Wine Estates covers over 2,050 acres, including 325 acres of meticulously maintained vineyards. The estate features a boutique winery where traditional and modern winemaking techniques come together under the guidance of renowned winemaker Mauro Nosenzo, with advice from Master of Wine Anthony Foster.

The vineyards are located in Cuadro Benegas, at an altitude of 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level. The sandy loam soil and high-trained vines contribute to the production of exceptional fruit. The estate practices eco-friendly, organic-inspired approaches combined with the latest winemaking technology.

This special black label Pinot Noir, crafted in a limited production of 1,400 bottles, utilizes the microvinification process—a method reserved for the highest-quality varietals and blends. The Pinot Noir harvest occurred just after mid-March, when the grapes had ripe seeds and firm skins. The grapes were kept nearly intact during fermentation to extract all the aromas, achieved by delaying the start of malolactic fermentation for 5 days and using a cold extraction process. The grapes were then macerated in whole bunches at varying temperatures to develop a greater tannic structure.

Aging: In new French oak barrels for 24 months.

100% Pinot Noir. medium intensity red cherry color, with fruity aromas.  Notes of red fruits such as raspberries and currants can be detected, as well as tobacco and chocolate derived from the passage through the wooden cask.  On the palate it is delicate with soft and balanced tannins, with mineral, earthy and some mushroom touches that are striking, and balanced acidity with a persistent finish.
