About the Wine
We can’t say enough about this wine and it’s a great example of how BHW does what it does. Given the tiny production, you are unlikely to find this outside of the winery tasting room. Our insider connections and ability to source and sift through thousands of wines is how we’re able to introduce to you one of the best value red wine blends from the benchmark 2016 vintage.
Scalon Cellars was created by friends Jesus Espinoza and Cruz Calderon after they met in 2005. Jesus Espinoza spent over 20 years as a vineyard worker in Napa before becoming the head man behind the Coombsville based, Scalon Cellars. Renowned winemaker Julien Fayard uses his expertise to produce wines that express pure, terroir-driven specificities and characteristics. Julien gained his knowledge and defined his core winemaking style from working at grand Chateaux in France such as Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte.
In Napa Valley, he’s worked alongside renowned winemaker Philippe Melka along with overseeing top Napa brands such as: Azur, Mithra, Brion, and Purlieu. Since its inception, this wine has been exclusively allocated to the tasting room and restaurants alike but it is now exclusively available for your pleasure and enjoyment!
2016 was one of the best vintages in Napa Valley Northern California has ever seen! Robert Parker and Wine Spectator have each given the vintage a 98 point rating, a score rarely given. 2016 was the final drought-influenced season that produced near-perfect fruit that shows great intensity of flavor. These wines are built to last and will reward those patient enough to see them into the next decade!
Tiny allocation. Only 325 cases produced.
Tasting notes: 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc. The wine is fresh and blue fruit-driven with a hint of herbaceousness. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, blackcurrant, coffee bean, fresh herbs, and tobacco leaf blanket the nose. The wine is remarkably well structured and polished with a touch of tannin and an everlasting finish. This wine tastes better than many $200 wines from Napa!

This shows a range of smoldering sage, tobacco, and fresh humus notes inlaid into a core of steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Sports some slightly chewy grip through the finish, though this retains polish as well, imparting balance. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. 325 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator
