About the Wine

Founded in 1970 by Dick and Nancy Ponzi, their 20 acres of vines southwest of Portland helped put the Willamette Valley on the map. With international recognition abound, their not only one of the top producers in Oregon but one of the finest in the world! Their vineyards have been LIVE certified sustainable since 2000 and their winery since 2008. Today the second generation is at the helm taking the winery to even greater heights! Their wines, full old world wisdom and new world energy, show why their family-run winery is operating at the most sophisticated level.

The 2015 Tavola Pinot Noir continues a string of amazing Tavola vintages. The running joke at our office is that the wine is literally too good for the price. While made from lower elevation sites and younger vines, and handled in a way to emphasize a fruit forward character, with soft tannins, anything Luisa Ponzi approaches will have high quality as prerequisite. Tavola is the type of wine that can be an introduction to Oregon and Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and, with its generous fruit and exotic spice and floral notes, the start of a delicious exploration!

Tasting Notes: Beautiful aromatics of blackberry, cinnamon stick, dried cranberry and cedar jump from the glass. The mouth is supple with strawberry, balsamic reduction, lavender, thyme and cocoa powder finishing with soft tannins laced with black licorice.

Reviews

Stunningly good for an entry-level Pinot Noir, this new Tavola gets the sort of care generally reserved for reserves. Native yeast fermentation and almost a year in 20% new French oak is where it starts; then a barrel selection is made and it's bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep flavors emphasize black fruits, with a dash of pepper highlighting the finish. ~92WE

Ponzi’s table wine, Tavola, has a prominent caramel scent of oak that obscures its mint-edged freshness. It may smell oak-forward, but it doesn’t taste predominantly of oak; rather, it lasts on a tart burst of red cherry flavor held in a pleasant middleweight texture that overdelivers for the price. ~91W&S
