Although Domaine Lucien Barrot was founded in 1975, their history dates back to 1690 when the Barrot family first arrived in this illustrious wine region– nearly three centuries of winemaking heritage!
Legend has it that the vineyards we now know as Domaine Lucien Barrot began when Eugene Gabriel divided his 5 hectares of vines equally among his four sons. Initially called Cuvee du Tastevin, a dispute with Clos Vougeot from Burgundy led to the birth of Domaine Lucien Barrot. Today, Regis Barrot skillfully manages the estate.
Domaine Lucien Barrot proudly owns 16 hectares of vines spread across 24 different parcels in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It's like assembling a puzzle, blending grapes from various terroirs and ripeness levels, but they do it with finesse. They also have 2 more hectares of vines producing delightful Vin de Pays.
Domaine Lucien Barrot Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Mourvedre, with vines averaging nearly 50 years of age. The terroir boasts galets and limestone soils in prime locations like Colombis, Deves d’Estouard, le Font du Pape, Pignan, and les Terres Blanches lieux-dits.
Here's the exciting part, this wine embraces tradition. It's a nod to the old ways of winemaking. No modern gimmicks here! The grapes aren't destemmed; they're fermented whole bunch, stems and all. Vinification takes place in venerable cement vats, followed by aging for 12, 24, or 36 months in large, ancient foudres before bottling.
2017 was an excellent year for Southern Rhone. Wine Spectator blessed this year with a 97-point review and said: "rare rich, ripe, and full of powerful fruit. In the style of 2009 and 2007, with better definition."
80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Mourvedre.
Ripe, featuring a lively core of red currant, raspberry and plum coulis flavors streaking through, carried by light spice notes and a pretty floral flash through the finish. Silky in feel overall, with a light mineral echo. Drink now through 2030. 1,500 cases made. ~91 Wine Spectator
