About the Wine

The history of Castiglion del Bosco dates back to 1100 A.D., amidst armed struggles and assaults. This corner of Tuscany also bears the imprint of great Sienese families, who settled and brought here the artistic genius of Pietro Lorenzetti, whose precious Annunciazione dei Santi (1345 A.D.) still adorns the hamlet's tiny church. Agriculture always played a prominent role on this great estate: for over 800 years now, Castiglion del Bosco has been flourishing within the same boundaries, almost as a world apart. Here still stand its borgo, its school and stables, its crops and fields, its vineyards and olive groves.

In 1967 Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino was established, and Castiglion del Bosco was one of its few founding members. In 2003, Castiglion del Bosco was restored to its former glory thanks to Massimo Ferragamo who, having fallen in love with the Capanna vineyard, bought the estate to fulfill his Tuscan dream. Today the wines of Castiglion del Bosco receive worldwide recognition for their excellence.

This Brunello di Montalcino originates from Capanna vineyard, located in the north-west area of Montalcino. The vineyard is naturally isolated at altitude and faces towards the Mediterranean sea. The soil is clay shale and marl (Galestro rock), giving this prestigious wine a refined elegance and great personality.

The wine is garnet-flecked, ruby red, it releases generous, emphatic fragrances classic to Sangiovese, developing a near-endless progression notable for its beautiful balance.

The wine is 100% Sangiovese.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"The 2015 vintage is an historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."

Reviews

Wonderful aromas of flowers, plums, terracotta and white pepper. Intense, yet ever so subtle. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and intense finish. Shows excellent length. Drink after 2021. ~ 97 JS
