About the Wine

If you've been to Tuscany, you know magic imbues the air, land, and wine. Owners of the famed Grand Cru Classe properties in Margaux, Ch. Giscours and Ch. du Tertre, were intoxicated by the potential of this property located south of Pisa and purchased it in 2003. After upgrading the property with feng shui inspired new cellars, biodynamic farming, and a crew that included a winemaker with degrees from both Dijon and Bordeaux, Caiarossa was born.

Named after the red earth and the mother of all gods, Gaia, the top wine is a mystical blend of Bordeaux varietals plus Sangiovese.

The winery logo is an actual Etruscan pottery head dating from the 4th Century B.C. that was found on the property.

Note, this is the winery's flagship Caiarossa Caiarossa wine, not their lesser wines. Also worth noting, Bolgheri's famous Supertuscan estates are located a short 25km away.

Aging: 18 months in oak.

Tasting Notes: Red Wine.

Reviews

The nose immediately shows a fabulous contrast between riper mulberries and blackberry crumble and freshly ground herbs, citrus and incense. The palate shows much the same polish, carrying bright blue-fruit flavors across a bedrock of muscular tannins and driven acidity. This finishes long and very grainy yet succulent. A blend of merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, sangiovese, petit verdot and alicante. Drink in 2022. ~96 James Suckling

The 2015 Caiarossa is expressive and profound. A lot of dark fruit intermingles with spice and toast in what is an immediate and open wine. This is a complicated blend of Cabernet Franc (31%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (17%), Petit Verdot (11%), Sangiovese (10%), Syrah (9%) and Alicante (2%). The result is full, generous and tight but with a subtle tingle of volatile acidity at the close. Some 37,800 bottles were made.

During my sunset visit to the beautiful Caiarossa estate in Riparbella on the Tuscan Coast, we had an opportunity to open a few older vintages. You will find those reviews here along with notes on the current releases from this biodynamic estate. In 2004, Caiarossa was purchased by the Dutch entrepreneur Eric Albada Jelgersma (who sadly passed away in June 2018). He was also owner of third-growth Bordeaux estate Château Giscours and fifth-growth Château du Tertre in Margaux. He is survived by three children who oversee the estate today.~94 Robert Parker
