One of the original estates of Montalcino and now the largest certified organic estate in Tuscany, Col d’Orcia is a leader in Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is known for helping to define and promote one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. Tradition, integrity, and sustainability are the pillars of the estate, whose classic style wines are celebrated all over the world. Proudly defined as an ‘organic island,’ Col d’Orcia is committed to maintaining the natural environment in which it operates and has, for many years, employed organic farming practices.
The estate’s name translates to “the hill overlooking the Orcia River,” as its position lays in the undulating hills between the Orcia River and Sant’Angelo in Colle. Here, the southern orientation provides vines with abundant exposure to sunshine. The vineyard soils are comprised of limestone and marl which facilitates natural irrigation. Located at about 1500 feet above sea level, the estate is favorably positioned against Mount Amiata (5,700 feet) which helps shield the property from floods and hail. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with limited rainfall coming in from the Tyrrhenian coast, 21 miles away.
2010 was an extraordinary vintage for Montalcino. Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate blessed this vintage with a 98 point review. Wine Spectator said, "wines are fresh, elegant, balanced and structured, with ample ripe fruit flavors. The best should age beautifully."
Aging: three years in Slavonian and French oak barrels, followed by approximately three years refinement in bottle before release.

Released seven years after the harvest, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is a stunning wine. It soars to the highest altitudes in terms of elegance and power. These opposite forces—muscle versus grace—are what distinguish this classic vintage. Col d'Orcia has effortlessly captured and immortalized both sides of the continuum. The bouquet produces a long succession of aromas including dried cherry fruit, licorice, cola, lavender flower, cured meat and black truffle. The velvety finish is supple and long in persistence. Clear, rich ruby with fine garnet rim. Initially somewhat restrained nose, then shows notes of cherries, some cranberries, leather in the background. On the palate powerful, grippy tannins, hearty, multi-layered, salty on the midpalate, then juicy drive on the finish.~94 Falstaff
Broad-shouldered and dense, with plum, cherry, leather, iron and tobacco flavors gaining intensity as this complex red evolves on the palate. The finish is very stony, with a lingering aftertaste of chalk and iron. Drink now through 2030. 1,600 cases made, 160 cases imported. ~94 Wine Spectator
Medium deep red. Flinty nuances complicate strawberry, floral and blood orange aromas. Deep, dense and almost brooding on the palate, but with outstanding precision to the spicy red fruit and earth flavors. Finishes with substantial fine-grained tannins and outstanding length.
