The wine-growing tradition of the Dr. Hugo Thanisch family can be traced back more than 350 years. In 1636, the name was mentioned for the first time in the registers of Bernkastel-Kues. The quality of the family’s wines soon extended their excellent reputation far beyond the Mosel valley. At the end of the 18th Century, the Thanisch’s acquired the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard, a very steep site with a deep devon slate structure, situated behind and overlooking the rooftops of the quaint old town of Bernkastel. The Doctor's name originates in a legend about Prince Boemond II of Trier who fell sick and then was cured by a wine from this vineyard. The medicinal powers of fine wines are today being rediscovered! Without a doubt, the Doctor Vineyard is the most valuable and famous German site.

The Thanisch estate includes over 30 acres of vineyards located on the best sites of “the best place for Riesling in the world” a.k.a Mosel Valley. Mosel is, in Wine Spectator’s words “one of the most striking wine regions on Earth.”

This wine comes from Badstube, the Bernkasteler Badstube comprises six of the best vineyard sites in Bernkastel. The growing site’s soil features a fine slate that stores water extremely well. Very lively and fresh Rieslings grow here with racy and stable acidity and extraordinary potential for development.

Finherb is a term to describe an off-dry wine similar to Halbtrocken. This wine has 22 g/L residual sugar.

100% Riesling. 22 g/L residual sugar.

A very juicy and refreshing riesling Kabinett that’s barely off-dry, with stacks of stony and earthy character alongside the bright white-peach and Amalfi-lemon fruit. Spot-on balance at the long, super-clean finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~93 James Suckling

The 2021 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett feinherb offers a deep, intense and flinty, damned serious and complex nose for "just" a Kabinett and shows a ripe, dense fruit aroma with spicy notes of crushed slate. Crystalline and saline on the palate, this is an intense and substantial Badstube with a mouth-filling texture and fruit and a saline finish. This is not really a light wine but an excellent Riesling to have with food, especially when matured in the bottle for about 10 years. 10% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022. ~92 Wine Advocate
