About the Wine

This wine is sourced from a walled vineyard on a very small island in Venice. The vineyard location itself is a rarity, placed in the Venetian lagoon just a couple feet above sea level. Additionally, the Dorona grape that is grown here was nearly extinct, with its entire population dwindled down to just a couple of vines prior to its resurrection by Tenute Venissa. This rediscovered grape is chock full of fruit and a touch of minerality, ready to impress those in search of the scarcest wines in the world.

Vinification is carried out by Desiderio Bisol and Roberto Cipresso, a renowned enologist with a passion for viticultural history. Cipresso calls for a long maceration on the skins, a practice once used by farmers, to obtain a white wine with the structure and longevity of a red. From the skins, the Venissa wine extracts the flavors and unique aromas typical of this inimitable terroir: notes of salt, honey, wormwood and white peach.

Tasting Notes: 100% Dorona. The wine is golden in color and instantly spicy on the nose with iodine notes and nuances of fleshy yellow fruit. On the palate it is well-structured, full and velvety with dominant almond notes and traces of yellow peaches and honey. The finale is dry, savory, full and persistent.

Reviews

Complex and compelling, this deeply colored white boasts aromas of orange zest, eucalyptus honey, sea breeze and balsamic notes. Made with Dorona, a nearly extinct grape from Venice, the polished focused palate doles out mature yellow peach, maple syrup and almond accompanied by a savory mineral vein. Fresh acidity lifts the dry finish and bestows an age-worthy structure. Drink through 2023. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

Deep golden-tinged straw color. Apple, orange oil, chamomile and tea leaves on the nose and in the mouth. Offers noteworthy salinity on the tactile mouthfeel of macerated grapes; finishes long and clean with a savory bite. I like this slightly lighter-styled version than some that speak of heavier, longer skin contact. ~92 Vinous Media
