About the Wine

McLaren Vale is the birthplace of wine in Southern Australia. This region has been producing high-performing red wines for decades. Decanter magazine said, "This famous South Australian wine region, more than any in the country, has succeeded in balancing tradition and innovation."

One of the winemakers embracing Southern Australian wines is legendary Aussie winemaker Steve Grimley. At his Five O-Clock Somewhere Wines, he leads a group of passionate, young winemakers and wine lovers who craft collections of wine that are inspired, inventive, and engaging.

Under the Five O-Clock Somewhere umbrella, Grimley’s own exclusive collection is Ees & See. Under this label, he creates what he calls “wines that are interesting, purposeful, and honest in a dare-to-be-great environment.” This wine is the ideal wine to acquaint you with this rising star in McLaren Vale.

The grapes for the 2014 Ess & See Tempranillo come from the vineyard near Mt Lofty, sitting high above Adelaide at approximately 250 meters above sea level and looking over it to the west out to sea. The vineyard location makes it the perfect place to grow Tempranillo.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes100% Tempranillo. Exciting and alluring on the nose with dusty, savory, floral, and perfumed notes melded with red fruits and light earthy hints. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of tart red currants, licorice, and cloves. It's showing some leather and tar characters, with savory, grainy tannins and juicy acidity. Amazingly rustic.

Reviews

Despite the broad South Australia appellation listed on the label, this small-batch wine is from a single vineyard located between Barossa and the Adelaide Hills. It's meaty and stalky, with raisiny dark fruit, cocoa powder, and Dr. Pepper notes. The palate changes directions but is equally delicious in juicy cranberry, earth, and herbs, with tightly-grained tannins and lively acidity. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
