Wine Spectator said that "If you want to understand what great Italian wine is all about, buy a bottle of Brunello. No wine in Italy matches Tuscany's Brunello di Montalcino when it comes to class and age-ability."

Many an independent winemaker will tell you that if you want something done well, you’re going to have to do it yourself. Patrizia Cencioni takes this adage to the extreme—as winemaker, vineyard manager, and owner, she is the singular beating heart and soul of her independent estate. Patrizia wanted to make Brunello wines (but her family felt it wasn’t “women’s work”); thus, she bought a crumbling property on the northeast flanks of Montalcino in 1989 and set to doing things her way. Her soulful wines stand as a solid example of how hard work and perseverance can take a dream and transform it into one of the more promising boutique estates in this world-famous appellation.

Nestled between 900 and 1,050 feet in elevation, Patrizia’s vineyard thrives on classic Montalcino soil—galestro clay and bits of volcanic rock—ideal for producing Brunellos of intensity and depth. Her vines, tended organically with utmost respect for the land, benefit from warm Tuscan afternoons balanced by cool mountain breezes, ensuring each grape ripens slowly and fully.

This 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is Patrizia’s masterpiece, bringing out layers of cherry, earthy tobacco, and subtle cocoa that echo the heritage of Tuscany itself. Aged in traditional Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered, it’s a wine built to last, with a depth and elegance that can be enjoyed now or left to evolve gracefully over the years.

Patrizia’s Brunello isn’t just a wine—it’s a story, a legacy, and a testament to determination. Serve this for a special gathering, or let it age in your cellar for future celebrations. It’s the bottle that’ll have your guests wide-eyed and asking for more.

Aging: 36 months in French and Slavonia oak barrels.

100% Sangiovese Grosso. This wine’s bright ruby red color hints at what’s to come—a burst of cherry, balanced with Mediterranean herbs, and subtle notes of tobacco and cocoa. Bold yet smooth on the palate, it’s a perfect partner for red meats and game, bringing depth and flavor to every sip.

Noble and decidedly pronounced in its sensory profile, it certainly does not go unnoticed! The notes of black plums blend beautifully with nuances of bergamot, liquorice, sandalwood, juniper berries and guarana. Full body, biting tannins of excellent fine grain and a solid, persistent finish that shows modernity and personality. Best in 2025. ~96 Raffaele Vecchione-WineCritics.com

Ruby/garnet-colored, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is appealing on opening, with lush aromas of chocolate covered cherries, sweet sage, pressed flowers, and licorice lifting from the glass. Full-bodied, it expands through the palate with ripe tannins and retains lovely purity throughout. They have done a nice job here finding more balance in these wines, and this is certainly an exceptional vintage for this family estate. I’ve enjoyed watching their evolution. Drink 2025-2037. ~93+ Jeb Dunnuck
