Chianti Montalbano is one of Chianti's seven subzones. These vineyards are located on the hills of the province of Prato, which is west of Florence and south of Pistoia. The wines here are known for their freshness and approachability. With every sip of this outstanding Chianti Montalbano, you’ll be immediately transported to this beautiful region. This wine is harmonious, balanced, and the perfect daily drinker!

With more than 1300 years of history, Villa Bibbiani is a little gem in the heart of Tuscany. Gambero Rosso said that Bibbiani is “much more than a winery, much more than an estate.”We agree.

The story behind Villa Bibbiani is just fascinating. To track its origins, we have to go back to Middle Ages, when the Villa belonged to the Benedictine monastery. However, “modern” times at Bibbiani started in 1700, when the property was acquired by the Frescobaldi family. For those who don’t know, Frescobaldi is Italian royalty. This family was responsible for the first vineyards and the botanical garden (still to this day) planted by Cosimo Ridolfi, the father of modern Italian agriculture.

Today, it’s owned by a doctor from Houston who sold his San Antonio healthcare group to United Healthcare. He has spared no expense to upgrade the winery in the last decade, bring in a talented young winemaker, and the wines are once again receiving the critical praise they have had for centuries.

Bibbiani is in a magical place, so surreal that it has even been embodied in Leonardo Da Vinci’s art. Located in the hills of Montalbano between Capraia and Limite, this colossal property comprises a total of 1,000 acres, this includes the famous Villa (a 5-star accommodation), the botanical garden, olive orchards, vineyards, and the ancient cellar. The property has significant flora and fauna and biodiversity.

The beautiful vineyards extend from the slopes of Montalbano hill to the church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. They are planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other native grapes, with vines between 20 and 50 years old.

Leopoldo Morara is Villa Bibbiani’s winemaker. He has forged his expertise at very well regarded estates in France, Chile, and New Zealand. This young, passionate winemaker has been leading Bibbiani’s team since 2018. He says, "the key to making a good wine is maximum respect for the terroir, and we work solely along these lines.”

Bibbiani is the perfect combination of tradition with modernity. The state-of-the-art vinification area, and the ancient cellar, combined with Tuscan winemaking tradition, deliver Bibbiani’s exceptional, unexpected, and unique wines. Acquired by an American owner in 2016, the property has undergone extensive upgrades.

BHW directly imports Villa Bibbiani's wines. We have the lowest price anywhere, available exclusively through BHW.

2018 was a great year for Chianti, Vinous Media awarded this vintage with a 94-point review, and said that "these wines are gracious wines of immense pleasure, the 2018s are incredibly delicious."

Aging: 8 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and a small percentage in French oak barriques, a portion in stainless steel tank and a portion in amphora.

90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo Nero e Colorino. A portion of this wine was aged in a terra cotta amphora which contributes a wonderful mouthfeel and depth, without making the wine heavy or oaky. Harmonious, and balanced, this is a very food friendly wine. The wine has a bright red color and a bouquet of cherry and small red fruits. Soft and enveloping tannins, together with a pleasant freshness, give great elegance to this typical Tuscan wine.
