"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award-winning wine since its inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chianti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.
For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been producing benchmark Italian wines from their historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Tuscany and more recently in the Maremma, Sicily, and the Veneto. The passion, commitment, and expertise that goes into these expressive wines are a reflection of the Mazzei’s spirit of innovation and respect for each property’s unique terroir.
"Concerto" was born in 1981,and was a forerunner and major player as one of the original "Super Tuscan" wines. Built around a blend primarily made of Sangiovese, this wine is able to convey the local terroir around a native variety while being bolstered by the Cabernet Sauvignon that is blended in. 2016 is a top vintage in Tuscany, the weather provided a long growing season that allowed the grapes to fully mature to their peak complexity.
Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new), 18 to 33-year-old vineyards.
80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and juicy, notes of underbrush and blackberries, powerful and fine tannins on the palate.
The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate's blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush, and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity, and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. Two thousand sixteen is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it. ~95 Vinous Media
The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 225-liter French oak for 18 months. The Cabernet Sauvignon element comes through nicely with dark fruit, spice, and some grilled herb. The grape gives the wine a heavier and more concentrated center of gravity. However, the soul and style of the wine is driven by the freshness and delicate aromas of the Sangiovese. ~94 Wine Advocate
A flamboyant and flavorful red with lots of plum and cherry character. Full body, soft tannins, and a fruity finish. Lovely, fruity wine with a caressing structure. Drink in 2020. ~94 James Suckling
