About the Wine
Located at the base of the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla (Washington State), Charles Smith opened his first winery, K Vintners, in December of 2001. The first release,1999 K Syrah from Walla Walla Valley, initiated the style of winemaking that Charles continues today: small lots of single vineyard Syrahs and field blends of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, and Viognier, all of which are hand-picked, fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and basket pressed.

His wines continue to receive broad recognition from leading wine publications such as Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits with 165 scores of 95 points and above, and 632 scores of 90 points and above.
Reviews
Coming from the Royal Slope, which no doubt will deservedly have its own appellation before long, enchanting aromas of ground rock, green olive, green stem, crushed flower and dark fruit lead to a panoply of fruit and savory flavors that shake the senses to the core, with smoked meat notes persisting on the long finish. It's an intense experience but maintains a sense of balance that is heart stopping. Drink from 2020-2027. ~95WE, Cellar Selection
(aged in 50% new oak puncheons): Bright ruby-red. Alluring scents of cassis, black cherry, boysenberry and licorice are distinctly darker than those of the 2013 version. Pungent, juicy and high-pitched, in a tightly wound, rocky style, with its berry fruit lifted by an almost citrussy high note. Intense, penetrating Syrah with a strong element of saline minerality. This fairly sizable wine finishes with noteworthy salinity and energy but needs at least a few years of cellaring to unwind. ~94VM
