About the Wine

Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir reflects the cool maritime climate of Tasmania's Coal River Valley, and the site itself is gently sloping, north-east facing, with light silica over sandstone. The result is a beautifully aromatic and textured Pinot Noir with intensity, power, purity, and complexity.

Tolpuddle Vineyard has a unique, strong, and expressive character. Commitment in the vineyard, with an emphasis on working by hand, augments the site’s natural character at its best, while also ensuring that the best from each set of vintage conditions is captured in the wines. The wines are made in a respectful way, using traditional, low-intervention winemaking methods.

Tolpuddle Vineyard is an outstanding vineyard established in 1988 and takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of 19th-century agricultural laborers, some of whom were transported to Tasmania as convicts to work on a farm in the Coal River Valley, part of which is now Tolpuddle Vineyard. Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW purchased the vineyard in 2011 and now make two wines – Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay and Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir. They believe Tolpuddle is one of Australia’s great single vineyards, with plantings of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir.

Located about 20 minutes' drive from Hobart, in Tasmania’s southeast, the Coal River Valley has established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes. With a climate at the cool extremes for viticulture in Australia, it is no surprise that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir perform so splendidly. An anomaly for such a cool climate, the rainfall is significantly lower than many of Australia’s other cool climate regions, with an average of approximately 500mm of rain per year. This cool but relatively dry climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly in autumn, without the disease pressure that heavy rainfall can bring. The vineyard is planted with mature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines, facing northeast and sloping gently up from Back Tea Tree Road. The soil is light silica over sandstone and of moderate vigor, ensuring well-balanced vines producing grapes of great flavor and intensity.

Tasting Notes:  100% Pinot Noir. This wine is true to the Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir style: intensely aromatic, medium-bodied with savory spice notes, along with the purity of varietal expression, fresh acidity, and ripe tannins.

Reviews

A juicy, almost fleshy wine that shows great promise, but the fruit will need time to unwind from the taut acidity and gently grippy tannins. Dense fruit, mainly in the red berry and cherry spectrum, but with a hint of slightly darker berries in the background. Very young, but should be stunning when it settles down. ~96 Natasha Hughes MW.

I love the transparent, floral nose of this beautifully crafted and extremely fresh Tasmanian pinot noir. Fantastic interplay of mineral acidity with fresh black cherry and ripe strawberry fruit on the super-elegant palate. Long, silky and citrusy finish. From the Coal River Valley sub-region of Tasmania. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~95 James Suckling.

Black cherry, lingonberry and goji oh my, a wonder of brooding black and red berries fill this lush baked berry pie. Star anise and salted licorice root move into ground coffee and potting soil. The wine grows into its savory tones and finishes with tight tannins and cola bitters. Drink with braised pork and wild mushrooms. ~93 The Wine Pilot.

This is a wine we have not yet seen from Tolpuddle. It has such well-curated complexity and whole-bunch influence (40%) sits in the sweet spot. It is concentrated, yet so elegant and the vivid freshness that pervades every aspect of the nose and palate is striking. Aromas of red fruit, such as raspberry, strawberry, red cherry, and red plum are framed in spice and fragrance. The palate has such impressive definition and clarity and the tannins are so detailed, fine, and clear-cut. Concentrated red and darker cherries are fleshy, yet elegantly focused, and the acidity laces it all up so clearly. So drinkable now and for a decade at least. Screw cap. ~99 James Suckling (v.2020)
