About the Wine

Trefethen has been producing award-winning, estate-grown wines for over fifty years. Their legacy includes producing “The World’s Best Chardonnay” back in 1979 and more recently the 2017 Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon was named “Best in Show” at the 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards. Today, the third generation of the Trefethen family carries on this vision. Wine lovers in search of outstanding Napa Valley wines turn to Trefethen knowing they will enjoy wines produced exclusively from their sustainably-farmed estate vineyards.

Founders Eugene and Catherine Trefethen were ahead of their time. While terms like “sustainability” or “estate grown” were not widely used back in 1968, they understood that in order to produce world-class wines they would need a special plot of land that was treated with the utmost respect. The estate is certified Napa Green, a certified California Sustainable Winery & Vineyard, and recently won an International Award for Sustainable Winegrowing.

Surrounding the historic winery, in the heart of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, is the Trefethen Main Ranch vineyard. Composed of 400 acres of vines planted in 49 distinct blocks. The vineyard sits on the largest alluvial fan in Napa Valley, where Dry Creek spills onto the valley floor spreading gravel eroded from the Mayacamas over clay and loam left by an ancient ocean. The soils change dramatically across the estate. The family had identified over twenty different soil types across the Main Ranch, allowing them to grow 9 different varieties, all planted in their preferred soil.

Aging: 18 months in 51% new American Oak

Tasting notes: 49% Malbec, 27% Petit Verdot, and 24% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine opens with expressive aromas of cherry and blackberry accented with notes of fig, tobacco leaf, and sarsaparilla. Full-bodied and balanced, the integrated flavors of ripe dark fruit lead to a lush and abundant finish. Winery Chef Chris Kennedy enjoys Dragon‘s Tooth with earthy and rich cuisine.

Double Gold ~96 2021 Sunset International Wine Competiton

A rich, round red with plum, berry, chocolate, and walnut character. Lots of cherry flavors. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a delicious finish. 49% malbec, 27% petit verdot and 24% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

The 2018 Red Blend Dragon's Tooth is a delicious Malbec-based blend. Pliant, juicy, and super-expressive, the 2018 has so much to offer. Ripe red cherry, mocha, and spice all open up in a mid-weight, succulent wine loaded with character. Drink it over the next handful of years. ~92 Vinous Media
