About The Wine

Douro’s wine region is a dream come true. With such beautiful and imposing vineyard landscapes located on steep slopes, that even UNESCO has declared them a World Heritage Site. And I am sure that if you are an adventurer and lover of rare and exciting wine, you are aware of this magnificent region!

Quinta do Portal exists as we know it today for about 20 years, but this winery has a history that dates back more than 2 centuries ago with Quinta dos Muros, owned by the Mansilha family, where Porto was produced for 4 generations.

This family-owned “boutique” winery produces excellent red, white, rosé, port, and sparkling wines that are worthy of global recognition and have received high praise from some of the best wine critics such as Robert Parker. Quinta do Portal has even appeared on Wine Spectator's list of the 100 best wines.

The property is made up of more than 5 estates, all in the Douro region. The vineyard of more than 250 acres is managed in a sustainable way, where they have implemented a cultivation system using natural and organic resources and eliminated the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals.

The winemaking has been overseen by Paulo Coutinho since 1994, and the star consultant, Pascal Chatonnet, a recognized winemaker from Bordeaux, who together with Michelle Rolland, created MR & PC Conseils, one of the most important wine consulting firms in all of France.

2016 Quinta do Portal Red Grande Reserva has been for a long time one of the best wines from all the Douro region. And 2016 was an exceptional year for Duoro and for Quinta do Portal, resulting in complex, aromatic, strong wines.

Aging: 14 months in 100% new French oak.

Tasting notes: 60% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz and 10% Touriga Franca. Concentrated in colour, complex aromas of red and black fruits, like blackberries and dark cherries. Lovely acidity on the palate, serious but round with charming tannins. The aftertaste is long and toasty. This wine pairs perfectly with game, veal and tomato-based pasta.

Reviews

This is a rich, impressively dense wine. This vintage is exceptional with its poise between richness and opulent black fruits. With its tannins and great concentration, it is just approaching readiness.” 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

A vibrant medley of cherry tart and raspberry reduction flavors marks this powerful but charming red, with accents of licorice and floral. Dusty tannins meld over the mineral and bergamot tea notes on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2028. 1,660 cases made, 100 cases imported.” ~93 Points, Wine Spectator.
