2019 El Escoces Volante "Es Lo Que Hay" Garnacha Vinas Viejas comes from the highly prized región of Aragon, Spain. The vineyards are located around the towns of Villarroya de la Sierra, Cervera de la Cañada, and Torralba, placed between 700 and 950 meters above sea level.

This winery is composed of more than 60 acres of old Garnacha vines (between 50 and 115 years old) and other indigenous grapes from the region like Mazuelo, Moristel, Macabeo, Provechon, and Garnacha Gris. This terroir is known for producing high-quality- and low-yielding concentrated wines due to its well-drained soils.

El Escoces Volante, which is translated from Spanish to "The Flying Scot," was founded by Norrel Robertson, a Scottish Post-Graduate in Viticulture and Enology from Lincoln University in New Zealand. Robertson became an expert who gained great experience working in countries such as Portugal, Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain.

His journey peaked when he became a Master of Wine in 2000, winning the Robert Mondavi Award for the most outstanding performance in the final exam.

In 2003 he moved to Spain and was captivated by the land and the potential that this wine region had. He decided to start producing his own wines. His sons and wife are currently involved in this family boutique project.

This wine is described as a "serious and complex wine, with abundant fruit on the pallet, fine tannins, persistent and delicious"by Jens Ris from Spanish Wine Page.

95% Garnacha and 5% [Moristel, Miguel de Arco, and Provechón (Bobal)]. Serious/complex stuff with ample berry fruit (blackberry, cherry, raspberry, plum), gravel/stones, mountain herbs, and a touch of dry hay. Plenty of fruit on the palate, terse tannins with body/substance, and great persistence. Delicious and very drinkable.

The red 2019 Es Lo Que Hay is mostly old-vine Garnacha with 5% other grapes, mostly Moristel with a little Miguel de Arco and some Provechón (Bobal), from very stony old vineyards in the village of Villarroya de la Sierra. The grapes fermented together with 20% full clusters in concrete and were destemmed after a five-day cold soak with the natural yeasts; then the wine matured mostly in concrete with some leftovers in Flextank egg for 15 months. It's ripe without excess (14.26% real alcohol), balanced by low pH and good acidity and has a powerful Mediterranean profile, round and full-bodied, with hints of dry hay and straw and a touch of dark chocolate. The 2019s are evolving nicely and should have a positive development in bottle, and this is a good example. 8,270 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020. ~93 Robert Parker

Ripe, fleshy, sweet red fruit... Smooth and polished on the palate, dried fruit with a crunchy finish. ~92 Miquel Hudin
