About the Wine

“Rust en Vrede is recommended as the number one Vineyard in Cape Town. Rust en Vrede is highlighted for its rich history of more than 300 years in winemaking at the Stellenbosch estate as well as for its portfolio of robust reds.” ~Sarah Khan, Travel & Leisure.

Rust en Vrede Estate is a place where history, passion, and innovation intertwine to create exceptional wines. Dating back to 1694, Rust en Vrede Estate has a story that spans over three centuries. Originally granted by Governor Simon van der Stel, this estate holds a special place in South Africa's wine tradition. Today, the Engelbrecht family continues this legacy, preserving historic Cape Dutch buildings and nurturing thriving vineyards.

Nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, Rust en Vrede Estate boasts a unique terroir. With vineyards situated between 85m and 130m above sea level and a view of Table Mountain, this microclimate is ideal for producing exceptional red wines. The focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes yields wines with robust flavors and a character that speaks of the land.

Winemaker Danielle le Roux brings her expertise to the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that reflects the terroir's essence. With meticulous care, this vintage captures the spirit of Rust en Vrede. Its rich structure and aging potential make it a true testament to the estate's dedication to quality.

Beyond crafting exquisite wines, Rust en Vrede is committed to sustainability. Natural predators assist in pest control, cover crops enrich the soil, and handcrafted farming techniques ensure minimal soil compaction.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Expressive black fruit jumps out of the glass. Juicy black cherry and cassis combine with blueberries, licorice, and sandalwood. Full-bodied and intense on the palate. Fine-grained, grippy tannins balance well with a fresh, black-fruit acidity. Tobacco, nutmeg, and savory spice bring complex layers to mulberry and bramble fruit that round out the palate. A typically well-structured Cabernet with excellent length.

Reviews

Ripe hedgerow fruits, with additional floral nuances, sweet oak spice, and bell pepper characters. Finishes with a strong tannin structure and forward oak. ~90 Decanter
