2018 Lagarde 'Guarda' Chardonnay Gualtallary Argentina

The Pescarmona family acquired Lagarde in 1969. They quickly become a trendsetter by being the first Latin American producer to plant non-traditional varieties such as Viognier and Moscato Bianco. Today the winery and estate are run by third-generation Pescarmonas, sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona. Under their direction, Lagarde creates exceptional terroir character wines that reflect a strong sustainable commitment to the land and its people.

Lagarde's Guarda' Chardonnay is an exemplification of the work and time invested in a special vineyard, the age of the vines, and treatment.This bottling comes from the Tupungato vineyard in one of Mendoza's premier appellations, Gualtallary. The Tupungato vineyard is next to one of Argentina's finest Grand Cru vineyards, the Adrianna Vineyard which consistently produces 100+ wines and over $100 a bottle.

Aging: 10 months in 60% new French oak.

 100% Chardonnay. In the glass, the wine displays a clear medium lemon hue. On the nose, features a bouquet of fresh lemon, white peaches, white flowers with a light presence of oak. On the palate, the wine is dry with refreshing acidity, flowers, and stone fruit with a refreshing vertical minerality. A good appetizer and goes very well with fresh salads, pastas, and fish. Its passage through wood also makes it perfect to pair with red and white meats, both roasted and baked

The classical 2018 Guarda Colección de Viñedos Chardonnay seems to follow the path of the excellent 2016. It was produced with fruit from their vineyard in Gualtallary in the Valle de Uco at 1,350 meters in altitude, which delivered a delicious white at 13.4% alcohol and very good acidity for what must have been one of the finest vintages in recent times. It's elegant and harmonious, with the salty flavors and marine sensations provided by the limestone soils. Really impressive! And the price is almost too good to be true... ~94 Robert Parker
