Icon, noun. is "a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration."
Regarded as a representative symbol, this wine is the icon of its place, the embodiment of the dedication, passion, and experience of its winegrower. This wine is selected from the year's best parcels, the 2018 vintage results in waves and waves of dark fruit on the palate.
2018 Chateau Montfollet Icone Blaye Cotes De Bordeaux is one to love. Andreas Larsson (named the best sommelier in the world in 2007 by the AIS) spoke highly about this particular wine. Here's what he had to say.
This iconic wine comes from an outstanding vintage, one that was awarded 96 points by Vinous Media, who stated that "It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic."
Dominique Raimond, also known as the “man who makes Malbec sing”, is the proud owner and winemaker of Château Montfollet. This outstanding family-owned artisanal winery is located in the heart of Blaye and Cotes de Bourg appellations. Two of the greatest value Bordeaux wine regions. The vineyards are placed in an outstanding terroir on the slopes of red clay and limestone, overlooking the Gironde estuary, just in front of the prestigious Grands Crus de Margaux. The 148-acre vineyards are managed under sustainable practices and were recently certified with HEV Level 3.
Dominique, born and raised in Bordeaux, comes from a legendary family of vignerons. He’s an emblematic and very well-known winemaker in the region, and president of Châteaux Solidaires, a cooperative founded in 1937, that includes 10 properties in Côtes de Bordeaux, whose main purpose is to transmit the magic of this region to all consumers. The wines from Montfollet are carefully vinified at Châteaux Solidaires, where the winemaking area and cellar are equipped with top-notch and innovative technology, in order to produce extremely high-quality wines.
Little by little, the family name Raimond has gained a recognized position in Bordeaux’s wine industry, and today, his wines from Château Montfollet and Puy d’Amour have achieved global recognition and high accolades among some of the most important wine critics in the world.
Aging: 15 months in new French oak barrels.
60% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot. Classic, old-world aromas, with notes of cassis, kirsch, cedar, and freshly laboured ground. The palate, however, is thoroughly modern, with waves and waves of dark fruit, violets, and vanilla. The finish is sophisticated, complex, plush, and refined.
Inky dark purple almost opaque colour. Some new oak, toast, dry spices ripe apricot, and blackberry notes. The palate is dense and concentrated with balanced yet high extraction, plenty of stuffing, integrated oak, crunchy dark fruit flavors, and a very long dense finish. ~92 Andreas Larsson.
Nice, expressive nose with warm chocolate fondant and berry compote aromas. Long, broad, rich, and remarkably balanced given its size. ~92 International Wine Challenge.
~92 Decanter World Wine Awards.
