Château Palmer whose pedigree architecture is a hallmark of its superb produce is an undisputed star of the prestigious Margaux Appellation. The unusual combination of grape varieties – as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a significant amount of Petit Verdot – gives Château Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity.
Located in the Margaux appellation of the Medoc, Bordeaux area, Château Palmer is a classified third growth (one of fourteen) of the 1855 classification. Its vineyard lies upon the famous gravel rises of the greatest of Medoc wines, this first terrace of gravels formed by and along the Gironde estuary. On this exceptional terroir, Château Palmer has constantly produced wines of unique character, clearly identified and recognized by fine wine lovers all over the world.
Château Palmer is one of the most coveted wines not just among the third growths but among all of the classified growths. It is located down the street from Chateau Margaux. Palmer started as part of Château d’Issan, it was then split off into the current estate as Château de Gasc. It wasn’t until Charles Palmer purchased the estate in the early 1800s that it received its current moniker. The house has since changed hands many times over its history and is currently owned by between 22 shareholders. Through the many different owners, one thing has been consistent, the wine delivers even in down vintages.

An excellent vintage overall in the appellation and a brilliant Palmer, right up there with the 2010 and 2005. Ripe, seductively textured with blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruits, all expressed with clarity and purity. The velvety, appealing quality to the tannins is already clear even at five years old, as is the complex mix of oak, liquorice and crushed stone minerality wrapped up in silk. One of the gems in Margaux is unquestionably the 2015 Palmer. Possessing more elegance and purity, as well as concentration, than the Alter Ego, it offers up a gorgeous bouquet of crème de cassis, caramelized cherries, charcoal, and graphite, with just a hint of spring flowers in the background. A final blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 70% new oak, this full-bodied, ripe, incredibly polished 2015 is already hard to resist given its elegance and purity, yet should be at its best from 2023-2043. The 2015 Palmer is a wine of total refinement and class. All the elements are wonderfully meshed together, as they always have been from the very start. Dark black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, spice and leather notes are all seamless in the glass. The tannins are present, but they are silky and pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. Palmer is one of the most complete and harmonious wines of 2015. The 2015 Palmer is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot matured into up to 70% new oak. The official start of the picking was 22 September, finishing on the 7 October with the Petit Verdot and the Cabernet Sauvignon. This has a wonderful bouquet with layers of dark cherry, boysenberry, a faint hint of dark chocolate and minerals. There is superb delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied, but this constitutes a decidedly more structured Palmer than I have encountered in recent years, perhaps a little more masculine due to the slightly higher Cabernet content. This is a classic Palmer made by winemaker Thomas Duroux, symmetrical in some way, poised and effortless on the finish. Those who like the more showy Palmer might not warm to this 2015, but this has real class and sophistication, a Palmer that will repay those with the nous to cellar it for 10-15 years. This is dark and muscular in style, brimming with bramble, warm tar and paving stone notes that are matched by the deep layers of fig, blackberry and cassis fruit. A gorgeous bittersweet chocolate detail adds spine to the finish while violet and iron elements lurk in reserve. Another large wave of fruit and dark earth courses through the finish.
