Less than 1 mile away from world-renowned Château Petrus, you’ll find Chateau L'Eglise Clinet, a cult winery that has been around for almost 220 years.

The story started when Jean Rouchut bought some vineyards in the Pomerol appellation back in 1803. But it was some decades later, that the winery started to gain reputation and popularity. Today, this estate is run by Denis Durantou. He contributed to enormous changes and improvements in the vineyard and the cellar and he equipped the winemaking area with state-of-the-art technology. Today, this legendary winery is considered one of the very best Pomerol estates in the world. La Petite Eglise is L'Eglise's stunning second label.

“One of Pomerol's greatest estates, the bulk of L'Eglise Clinet's holdings are located around the winery itself, opposite Château Clinet, complemented by two small parcels, one by the church and another next to the château of La Fleur-Pétrus. The oldest vines date back to 1919, and the late Denis Durantou—whose swan-song vintage the wines reviewed here represent—was a great believer in the importance of high-quality vine genetics and propagating his own massal selections to replant here.”~RP

2019 was a great year for Pomerol. Vinous Media blessed this vintage with a 96-point review.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.

This is so perfumed with violets and blackberries, even some black truffles. Full-bodied with wonderfully polished tannins that melt into the wine. Reserved at the finish. Extremely racy and long. The 20% cabernet franc in the blend gives this depth and complexity. One of the best I remember. Try after 2026. ~96 James Suckling

The 2019 La Petite Eglise has turned out brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, sweet spices, rose petals, black truffle, orange rind and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's supple and enveloping, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. These days, this isn't really a "second wine" per se, as it combines some younger vine fruit with two dedicated parcels, one located next to Pomerol's church, the other by the château of La Fleur-Pétrus.~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 La Petite Eglise has blossomed into a rich, heady wine. Readers will have to be patient here too, as the Petite Eglise is far from an easygoing second wine. Blackberry, plum, leather, graphite, tobacco and licorice all build in a Pomerol endowed with tremendous class and nuance. There's real breadth and substance here. Floral notes from the Franc add a gorgeous touch as the wine starts to open. Hints of blood orange and spice linger on the exotic finish. This is the third vintage in which La Petite Eglise includes Franc, previously it was all Merlot. ~93 Vinous Media

Intense and concentrated Petite Eglise, raspberry and blackberry fruit rippling through the body of the wine, held in check by a deftly confident frame. You're in Pomerol here, with sweet heady floral aromatics, tons of bright plump fruits and an accessibility to the tannins that makes it extremely enticing. Easy to recommend this 2nd wine of L'Eglise Clinet. 30% new oak. ~93 Decanter

The second wine of Château L'Eglise Clinet, the 2019 Château L'Eglise Clinet Petite Eglise is a juicy, forward, up-front, and certainly delicious Pomerol that will put a smile on your face. Ripe darker cherries, plums, leafy herbs, and forest floor notes define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied and pleasure-bent on the palate. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
