About the Wine

Clos l'Église has earned a reputation as a high-quality, well-crafted wine. The vineyard is located in a prime location in Pomerol, with clay and gravel soil that is ideal for growing Merlot grapes, which make up the majority of the blend. The wine is known for its richness, complexity, and balance, with flavors of dark fruit, spice, and earthy notes.

Back in 1925, the estate was recognized as one of the leading "grands crus" of the appellation, alongside other famous names like l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. With a history dating back to the 18th century, Clos l'Eglise has always been a significant and respected estate, with a continuous tradition of viticulture.

Since 1997, this estate has been owned by the Garcin-Cathiard family. They have a deep love and respect for the exceptional terroir on which the vineyard sits and work tirelessly to ensure that the grapes are given the best possible chance to shine. The vineyard is managed with sustainable agriculture, and it's HEV3 certified.

Hélène Garcin and Patrice Levêque are the current caretakers of this extraordinary heritage, and their passion for exceptional terroirs is evident in everything they do. They work in a traditional way, understanding that the rarity of fine terroir comes with great responsibility. Aromas of green olives, walnuts, hazelnuts and a hint of cedar. Medium-to full-bodied and compact with a pretty center palate. Very long and beautiful finish. Under the radar. ~95 James Suckling

While the 2006 Clos L'Eglise was relatively closed aromatically, it offers a powerful, full-bodied style on the palate that certainly kept me coming back to the glass. With air, more chocolatey dark fruits, earth, and spice notes emerge from the glass.~ 92+ Wine Spectator

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London and then at the château, the 2006 Clos l'Eglise has an attractive, quite opulent bouquet with blueberry and crème de cassis aromas tinged with black truffle and violets. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, good acidity, grippy in the mouth and substantial weight on the finish. If it can evolve more finesse on the finish, this will be a very satisfying Pomerol. ~92 Wine Advocate

Clear cinnamon on the nose, followed by grilled saffron spice. This is impressive and gives a lovely sense of burrowing down through layers of black fruits. The tannins are barely yielding but they are neither bitter nor intrusive. ~91 Decanter
