From one of our favorite under-the-radar producers Burgundy, the Domaine Poulleau Pere & Fils Chorey-les-Beaune comes from a family that, simply put, makes great Burgundy. The Poulleau family has crafted quality Burgundy since the 1960s. Established by husband and wife Michel and Jacqueline, their son Thierry and his wife Florence have since taken the reins. Over 90% of the wine they produce is made from Pinot Noir grown throughout Burgundy. They’reexperts at producing reds that reflect the terroir from the regions they’re grown in.
Chorey-les-Beaune is one of the small villages on the lower slopes of Côte de Beaune. This elegant, light, and supple Pinot that’s moderately tannic but rich and characterful grows on these slopes. The 50-year-old vines are harvested and aged in oak to create a wine that reflects both the terroir and the vintage, a vintage that Drinks Business observed resulted in reds that “are pretty now but should have the guts to last.”
If you have yet to experience a Pinot from Chorey-les-Beaune, this is the perfect entry bottle to introduce you to the region. If you have experienced Burgundy from the region, then you’ll know that while it’s under the radar, the wines are elegant and perfect for matching with lighter dishes—salmon, roast poultry, and grilled meats or soft cheeses like Reblochon or Brie.
2022 is looking to be a great year in Burgundy. Decanter said, "Despite the (very) hot and dry season, 2022 wasn’t a typical année solaire, according to the verdicts of Burgundy’s winemakers, with quality and quantity to be found, many early-drinking options, but reds to lay down, too. Overall quality is very high for red wines. There is more concentration in 2022… even if you try to make wine for the future, they are showing quite well right now."Demand for Burgundy is soaring. Demand for exemplary Burgundy at prices like this is even more so. Don't miss this great value Pinot Noir!
Aging: Oak barrels, 20% new
Core black cherry and red raspberry, light graphite shavings, a touch of black olive and black tea combine with a tension that dances in the mouth. This is a really proud, elegant, svelte wine that should probably cost well over $50.
