About the Wine

Perched atop the enchanting hill of La Morra in Piedmont, Italy, Voerzio Martini embodies a fusion of tradition and innovation in winemaking. For over 30 years, the visionary Gianni Voerzio has crafted exceptional Barolo, now joined by his dynamic twin offspring, Mirko and Federica Martini. Together, they oversee 19 acres of vineyards, crafting wines that epitomize Piedmont's terroir.

At Voerzio Martini, family is paramount, and their winemaking approach reflects this bond. They prioritize concentration over ostentation, favoring larger barrels for aging and eschewing excessive new oak. Each grape is handpicked and fermented in stainless steel tanks, ensuring meticulous attention to detail.

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Langhe, Piedmont provides the backdrop to this winemaking journey. Here, Voerzio Martini seamlessly blends heritage with modernity, preserving the expertise of Gianni Voerzio while embracing the innovative zeal of Mirko and Federica.

Their mission is simple yet profound: to nurture vineyards with care, preserving the land's integrity while producing grapes of unparalleled quality. From historic estates like La Serra to coveted Crus such as Cerequio and Monvigliero, every vineyard is cherished.

In the cellar, Mirko expertly blends new French oak and Slovenian botti, coaxing forth the purest expression of Barolo's terroir. The result? Wines that speak of tradition yet resonate with the vibrancy of the next generation.

“Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines and a partner to one of Italy's most varied and refined cuisines. It's an evocative landscape of gently rolling hills covered by a quilt of vineyards and topped by medieval villages with winding cobblestone streets and views to the Alps.” ~ Wine Spectator.

Reviews

The 2019 Barolo is a firm and compact expression of Nebbiolo that prioritizes power and a direct delivery of aromas. After a few moments in the glass, the wine begins to show crushed limestone, grilled herb and blue flower. It follows the Nebbiolo aromatic playlist faithfully in this vintage, but it also shows some flexed muscle. Production is 8,000 bottles. ~93 Robert Parker’s Wine Adovcate

Attractive nose of red plums, hazelnuts, peaches, sandalwood and lemon peel, with some nutmeg. Full-bodied and open, with firm, fine tannins and a balanced interplay of fruit and spice. Drink from 2025. ~92 James Suckling

A dense red highlighted by tart cherry, currant and leafy underbrush flavors. Delivers dusty tannins that leave a chalky feel on the finish, while this remains fresh and firm overall. Gets better with air. Best from 2027 through 2045. 450 cases made, 200 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator
