The story of Azienda Bruna Grimaldi is one of family passion and tradition, set among the beautiful hills that connect Grinzane Cavour and Serralunga in Barolo. Since 1957, when Giacomo Grimaldi first began selling grapes, the family has dedicated itself to the craft of winemaking. Giacomo’s brother Giovanni soon joined, selling wine by the liter, and by the 1990s, Giovanni’s daughter Bruna and her husband Franco transformed the business into a modern winery, releasing their first bottled wine in 1999. Today, their children, Simone and Martina, continue this legacy with energy and pride.
The Grimaldi family’s vineyards include the celebrated Badarina in Serralunga and old vines in Grinzane Cavour. They’ve also acquired prized plots in areas like Bricco Ambrogio in Roddi. Some vines are over 25 years old, and the estate sits near the renowned Francia Vineyard, home to Monfortino—a legendary Barolo that sells for over $1,300.
With a commitment to sustainability, Grimaldi uses no herbicides or harsh chemicals, allowing the vines to thrive naturally.
Aging: 24-30 months in Slavonian oak big barrels.
100% estate Nebbiolo from the Badarina Cru in Serralunga d’Alba. Clusters are selected carefully in the months before the harvest, each lot is picked separately. Barolo Badarina is vinified in purity. Ethereal bouquet, with red fruits, raspberries, herbs, and balsamic hints that emerge with aging. Important tannins, freshness, and minerality, for a Barolo of energy that improves over time. Pair with rich dishes such as mains with meat, game, stew, and matured cheese.
Note of dark spices, chocolate and bark with red and dark berry character. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and firm texture. It’stight and muscular with juicy and vivid red fruit underneath, before a flavorful finish. Needs some time in the bottle. ~94 James Suckling
The 2019 Barolo Badarina sees fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. The wine shows medium-rich concentration with aromas of red berry fruit and dried cherry. At the back are subtle notes of rusty nail, black licorice and crushed rose. Bruna Grimaldiand her family make wine in their winery in Grinzane Cavour but farm various parcels across the appellation. The Badarina often comes across as the boldest and most structured wine in the portfolio. ~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
