About the Wine

Scopone Brunello di Montalcino is a critic's darling. James Suckling said it is a "dense and rich and structured Brunello" and delightful wine. We say this is your chance to stock up on one of the best vintages for Brunello in modern times.

This brilliant Brunello was born in an epic 97-point vintage. Wine Spectator said this wine delivered "rich Brunellos, dense with tannins; the best have the acidity to age long term."James Suckling declared 2015 a fairy-tale vintage, and said that “The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it.”

Coming from a long-standing winery, Scopone has a storied and intriguing history. This estate which was once a 19th-century farmhouse became a refuge for the displaced during World War II. After some ups and downs, it was finally acquired by the Genazzani in 1992. Soon it became a winery born of legend.

In 1993 the mythical winemaker Settimio Dinetti, born and raised among vines and wines, came bearing 50 liters of new wine from the old, old vineyard. Apparently, it was so impossibly delicious that the 50 liters were consumed within “a breath” during an anniversary dinner. Here's where the magic started. Under the guidance of expert winemaker Dinetti, Scopone released its first wine in 1997.

Scopone is the perfect combination of modernity and tradition.Tradition still snakes through the vines of Scopone, giving the wine a classic and distinctive character. But it is with state-of-the-art technology and modern winemaking that the wines achieve this level of excellence.

With love and passion, the vineyards expanded and were recently acquired by the Minari Family. The Minari family has continued the tradition and dedication to these vines. They have eager plans for further expansion. Under the Minari Family, “a new story is being born in the name of Brunello.”

This is a classic Brunello di Montalcino, and if you're a Brunello lover and savvy wine drinker, this wine should be in your wine cellar. James Suckling and WinesCritic advised that this 2015 Brunello Riserva is "ready to drink today." However, it still shows a long life, and it can be cellared for a good number of years. If you decide to open it now, we highly recommend pairing it with mature cheeses and broiled meats.

Reviews

A fantastic red with loads of ripe fruit and an infusion of toasted oak and wet earth. It’s very young now and needs more time to come together, but very nicely done. Full-bodied with round, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink after 2022. ~94 James Suckling.

A distinctly oaky nose with a coffee and chocolate note alongside some darker fruit characters. Rich ripe fruit with a mineral finish. ~93 Decanter.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is wonderfully perfumed and spicy, with balsamic-tinged cherry and hints of blueberry fruit, which give way to cinnamon, allspice, clove, and a dusting of confectioner's sugar. The textures are silky-smooth, feeling almost creamy at times yet perfectly offset by tart wild berry fruits and brisk acids, as fine tannins mount toward the close. This becomes quite dry and structured through the finish, yet there's plenty of primary intensity within to balance and guarantee a long and fruitful evolution. That said, the 2015 Scopone does show an influence of oak, which is quite appealing but not for everyone. ~92 Vinous Media.

Mature and decisive, scents of an open nature giving notes of wild violets, red prunes, black cherries in alcohol, and sweet licorice. Full-bodied, slightly dry tannins and a finale of an amiable nature, slightly heavy in the closing. Better from 2022. ~92 WinesCritic.com
