Nestled in the historic town of Beaune, Burgundy, Maison Champy proudly stands as the region's oldest winery, with roots dating back to 1720. Designed by the legendary Gustave Eiffel, its UNESCO-declared monument status adds a touch of grandeur to its timeless charm.

Beneath the winery lie ancient 15th-century Jacobian monk cellars, where wines age gracefully, preserving centuries of tradition. It was here that Louis Pasteur conducted groundbreaking experiments, introducing the world to the revolutionary process of pasteurization and immortalizing Claude Champy's name in history.

Maison Champy's vineyard portfolio encompasses 52 acres of prime Burgundian terroir, including prized plots in Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru and the renowned Clos de Bully. These vineyards are lovingly tended using organic methods to capture the essence of their terroir.

At the helm of winemaking is Dimitri Bazas, guiding the Maison's wine styles for over two decades. Alongside him, Francis Simon tends to the vines with expertise spanning two decades, while José Ramalho, the Cellar Master of 35 years, oversees the barrel program. Together, this dedicated team crafts wines that embody Maison Champy's rich history and commitment to excellence.

2022 was an incredible vintage for Burgundy. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 96 point review, and said: "The style of 2022 is primed for early consumption, more than 2019 or 2020.The 2022 Burgundy vintage offers a bounty for those with a passion for its wines. "

100% Chardonnay. Open and intense nose with notes of orange and grapefruit. The attack is fresh and supple. Well-balanced and concentrated wine with good mineral length on the finish.

This reminds me of the best white burgundies I tasted back in the 1980s and early 1990s. The aromatic subtlety, the textural finesse plus the underplayed power are all beautiful. The candied lemon character also corresponds with the old textbooks. Very long, chalky finish that has so much energy. From a southeast-facing site. Sustainable. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling
