The 2019 Garage Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon Reelegido Vineyard is a striking example of high-altitude winemaking in Alto Maipo Andes, sourced from a single vineyard parcel in Isla Maipo Valley. Planted at an extreme elevation of 946 meters above sea level, this site pushes the limits of Cabernet Sauvignon cultivation, yielding a wine that is both powerful and elegantly refined.
Farmed by hand and horse, the vineyard’s alluvial soils, rich with round stones at 40-50 cm, force the vines to develop deep, resilient root systems, enhancing concentration, minerality, and freshness. The extreme altitude and diurnal temperature shifts contribute to slow, even ripening, preserving the wine’s natural acidity and aromatic complexity. Each grape cluster is hand-harvested at peak ripeness, undergoing natural fermentation in open conical oval-shaped lagar fermenters, with gentle cap punch-downs by hand—a meticulous, labor-intensive process that ensures maximum depth and finesse.
Aged for two years in well-seasoned barrels from a mix of cooperages, the 2019 Reelegido Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a pure, unadulterated expression of its terroir. The wine is structured yet fresh, with restrained, fine, almost creamy tannins and an elegant, long finish. It stands as a testament to traditional craftsmanship, sustainable viticulture, and the unique microclimate of the Alto Maipo Andes—a wine that is both a rarity and a celebration of its origins.
Aging: 24 months in well-seasoned French oak barrels from various cooperages.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vivid ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of fresh red berries, cherry pit, potpourri with hints of black pepper adding complexity. Spicy and expansive in the mouth, offering lively cherry and raspberry flavors and intense floral character. Silky tannins add grip and shape to the long, sappy finish. This wine received no new oak.
The nose has a raw meat note with graphite, gravel, thyme, and black pepper. There is a real juiciness on the palate with a streak of acidity and crushed dark fruits. The tannins are just resolving into the core of the fruit. This still has years to go and is brimming with energy and vibrancy. Delicious. ~94 Alistair Cooper MW by Catad'Or Wine Guide
Ripe and savory nose with pretty currants and hints of iron and graphite. Black olives and tobacco leaf, too. Full-bodied on the palate with plenty of fine-grained tannins and juicy fruit. Pretty compact, concentrated and long. Lot 111. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
