About the Wine

"At Giscours, a wine does not live by itself. It is a reflection of the place, its environment, and the people who make it."

2010 Chateau Giscours Margaux comes from one of the best vintages for the Left Bank ever! This year was awarded 99 points by Wine Spectator, where they call it a "powerful" year that "should be very long-lived." Robert Parker and Vinous Media blessed this year with a 98-point review, the last one stating that "this is a vintage of stunning, age-worthy wines."

Just over 3 miles away from world-renowned Château Margaux, is located Château Giscours a 3rd Growth Classified Châteaux. The history of this estate dates back nearly 700 years ago.

It was seized in the French Revolution and sold to Americans before the turn of the 19th century. It then changed hands many times while slowly falling into disrepair. It wasn’t until Nicolas Tari purchased the estate in 1954 that it started to make an upward trend. The real step toward living up to its classification is when Alexander van Beek took over as the managing director. He replanted much of the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and even moved the harvesting back to hand picking. Around the 2000 vintage, this estate really started producing top-tier wines.

Chateau Giscours's terroir is impressive, as you could have imagined, being located in one of the finest terroirs in the Bordeaux region. Its dry and meager gravel soils result in charming and delicate wines like the 2010 Chateau Giscours Margaux.

If you want to taste the real power and elegance of Bordeaux, this wine is for you. Collectors would be fortunate to have this wine in their cellar.

Aging: 17 months in French oak barrels, 50% new.

Tasting Notes:71 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 % Merlot. 2010 has its own style, precise and sensual. This wine always surprises with its structure and delicacy. Château Giscours 2010 is the rare expression of the perfect harmony between power and finesse, a wine for aging with exceptional freshness.

Reviews

Aromas of mint and currants with hints of fresh herbs. Then turns to plum jam. Full body, with well-integrated tannins and pretty fruit. Long and caressing. This is really outstanding. ~95 Points, James Suckling.

Giscours shows an initial character of great style and elegance. The shining fruit and concentrated tannins follow, making it both a seductive wine and one with a long-term future. ~95 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

Features a lightly firm, singed alder frame around a core of dark plum, cherry, and cassis bush notes. Taut tar and warm paving stone notes fill in on the finish. Shows a serious, well-embedded grip, and the core of fruit is spot on. This has the range, length, and cut for the cellar. Best from 2014 through 2030 ~94 Points, Wine Spectator.

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2010 Château Giscours is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot picked between September 27 and October 14. I contrasted this directly against the superb 2009, but I still maintain that this has the upper hand, albeit in a different style. The aromatics are very focused with black fruit, violets, fig, and mineral scents that are very well defined. But you need patience - this is not as immediate as the previous vintage. The palate delivers, delivers, and delivers brilliant delineation and poise, more freshness than it knows what to do with, an intensity that is supremely well focused and length in the mouth. There is even a dab of mint chocolate making a surprise appearance on the aftertaste. This is a very impressive Giscours. ~93 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
