The team at Calculated Risk doesn't settle for mediocre. They select varieties from the most exclusive appellations in Napa Valley. Keeping with the tradition of those that have changed the world around Napa, they strive to over-deliver with the best quality at an attractive and unbeatable value. That's why the majority of the fruit sourced for the 2018 Barrel Selection comes from low-yielding 45-year-old dry-farmed vines in St. Helena while the remained comes from high-quality vineyards in Oak Knoll. The winemaker, who's identity is to remain unknown, consults for a number of high-end Napa estates wielding a championship pedigree. The 2018 Calculated Risk Barrel Selection Cabernet Sauvignon will over-deliver on that promise of delivering quality at an attractive and unbeatable value. Are you willing to go all-in?
The 2018 Calculated Risk is a Barrel Selection Cabernet Sauvignon for those who live life on the edge, to the crazy ones, and the ones who change the world. The painters who recolor it. The scientists who redefine it. The innovators who take "It can't be done" as their starting point. They make computers in garages, turn moldy bread into medicine, and take the bus seats that were denied to them. They smash barriers because they are convinced that something better exists on the other side. When the pluses outweigh the minuses, they take the calculated risk. One bottle of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at a time.
Aging: 23 Months in 100% French Oak (50% new)
Tasting notes: Red Wine. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright and ripe blackberry, blueberry, and morello cherry aromas jump out of the glass and follow into the palate. Meaty tannins make the mouth salivate, while the heavy toast, cigar box, and vanilla make this a wine you'll want to snuggle. Recently bottled, the wine is already delicious. Over the next 6-12 months, it will integrate and get even better.
Wildflowers and roses with a fresh, blackberry and blackcurrant edge to the nose, too. The palate has soft, ripe, and almost creamy tannins on offer, in a soft, easy mode. Drink or hold. ~ 91 James Suckling (v. 2017)
