About the Wine
A close neighbour of the prestigious Haut-Brion and Pape Clément châteaux, this winery carries a name indicative of its pebbly soils that originated from sediments deposited by the nearby Garonne River over thousands of years.
In 2006, Paulin Calvet took over the daily running of the vineyard, breathing new life into the estate and giving it new impetus. The wines of Picque Caillou quickly acquired higher levels of quality and consistency, soon attracting the attention of numerous wine professionals.
In 2007 consultanting œnologists Professor Denis Dubourdieu and Valérie Lavigne joined the winemaking team, bringing their technical rigour and skill.
And so a top quality wine was born. A wine that displays superb balance and delicacy, reflecting perfectly the values of the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation. A killer vintage in Pessac, the 2015 Grand Vin is firing on all cylinders. Recognizing the sales prices of wines of its neighbors over several hundred dollars per bottle, this is a wine to case stack at this price.
Blend: 35% Merlot; 60% Cabernet Sauvignon; Petit Verdot 5%
Aging: 12 months, 30% new French oak
Reviews
Just on the edge of the urban sprawl of Bordeaux, this estate has managed to retain its vineyard despite the housing pressure. This year it is beautifully structured, dense and very stylish. Black-currant fruit, some firm tannins and balance make this wine so attractive. Drink from 2024. ~94WE
Attractive dark blackcurrants, violets, cedar and loganberries with hints of spiced raisins. There’s ample depth to the fine tannins. Bright, effusive dark fruit flavors with a light finish. Drink or hold.~93JS
