About the Wine

Château Desmirail started as part of the very large Rauzan vineyard, which eventually split off as part of a dowry paid to Jean Desmirail (where it takes its name). This estate has been in the hands of several important Bordeaux families (like Château Malescot St Exupery’s and Château Palmer’s owners) all of which contributed to significant and positive changes.

Since 1980, was acquired by the Lurton family, who have been doing an outstanding job of turning it into a truly top-notch Châteaux. It has become a favorite among Margaux enthusiasts due to its incredible value.

The Lurton family is Bordeaux royalty, this family owns over 20 estates, including 6 classified growths like Brane-Cantenac, and Haut-Bages Libéral.

Château Desmirail covers over 50 acres of vineyards located in different areas of the appellation, with a terroir characterized by deep gravel terroir from the Quaternary period, each of these vineyards contributes a special characteristic to the production of this stunning 3rd growth. The vineyards are placed in Margaux-Cantenac (adjacent to Brane-Cantenac, Rauzan-Ségla, and Palmer) Soussan, Arsac (next to Château du Tertre), and some hectares in Haut-Medoc.

The vineyards are sustainable, and since 2018, they achieved the HEV3 certification. The Lurton family believes “The production of high-quality grapes begins with the soil.” The combination of Margaux’s soil and the expertise of Eric Boissenot is the perfect formula to create this work of art.

2015 was a great vintage for Bordeaux, Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-point review and said that "Bordeaux enjoyed its strongest vintage in a number of years in 2015. The 2015s are spectacularly rich, racy wines loaded with personality. Margaux and Saint-Julien are the clear winners on the Left Bank."

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Dark ruby ​​garnet, violet reflections, subtle lightening of the edges. Ripe plum fruit, a hint of nougat, candied orange zest, and fine tobacco spice. Juicy, elegant, ripe cherry fruit, silky tannins, pleasantly sweet on the finish, elegant and persistent, good aging potential. ~94 Falstaff

The nose is aromatic and offers a good structure as well as a certain elegance. It reveals notes of blackcurrant, cherry, and woody cocoa associated with fine touches of vanilla as well as a subtle hint of flowers. The palate is fresh, mineral, well-led, and balanced, and offers good definition. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fresh boysenberry, raspberry, and slight notes of blackcurrant associated with fine/discreet touches of black cherry as well as touches of racy minerality and sweet/toasted spices. The tannins are a little firm and tight. Good length. Drying point on the finish. ~94 VertdeVin

Lovely, with crushed plum, boysenberry, and blackberry fruit inlaid seamlessly with warmed anise, singed mesquite, Lapsang souchong tea, and sandalwood notes. The fine-grained finish flows wonderfully. Best from 2022 through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. ~91 Wine Spectator
