About the Wine

There's a quote by Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson: “wine is bottled poetry.”Al-Cantara winery lives up to these words, the estate is pure art, from the winery itself to the artistic labels.

Al-Cantara was founded in 2005, and in less than 20 years, the winery has already managed to position itself among the top estates in the appellation. The quality of the wines is undeniable, and thanks to this, they have been featured more than 7 times in The Book by Vinitaly as “5 StarWines” making it the second most-awarded winery in Sicily and the sixth in Italy in 2020.

The 50-acre vineyard is planted with native grapes like Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante and some international ones like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Salvatore Rizzauto is the artist behind Al-Cantara’s wines. He graduated from Alba and has expertise in estates from some of the most important appellations worldwide like Bordeaux and Piedmont.

Etna DOC is located between Catania and Messina on the eastern coast of Sicily, very close to an active volcano named Mount Etna, a World UNESCO Heritage site. The terroir is out of this world, it features an incredible combination of fine ash, hardened lava, and sand. This results in extremely unique wines, which are the most genuine interpretation of Sicilian culture. If you want to learn more about this wonderful wine region, click here.

James Suckling once said, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are among the most delicate grapes in the world, producing world-class wines with power and finesse. If you have ever thought about an alternative that shows the beauty of both these grapes, Etna Rosso wines should be top of your list.” We agree Etna DOC is a hidden gem and a paradise for adventurous wine lovers.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting NotesNerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Floral and fruity on the nose, with hints of almond, cocoa, and cinnamon. The mouth is fresh and soft, guided by an elegant tannic texture, with an amazing body and good persistence. Don't be fooled by the playful artist label. This is serious wine that will transport you to Sicily!
