Spanning eight generations the Tasca family have been leaders in winemaking and innovation on the Southern Italian island paradise of Sicily. Since its inception in 1830, with tough passion and commitment, the family has dedicated its existence to producing Sicilian wines of unrivaled excellence. In 2012, the estate was awarded the prestigious Gambero Rosso Winery of the Year.
Born in 2008, Sallier de La Tour was brought forth as "a territory to discover." Not many Italian families, steeped in tradition as the Tasca's, steer away from their Italian roots. The vines, rooted in the heart of the relatively new DOC, Monreale (est. 2000), are devoted to producing first-rate Sicilian Syrah. A variety, native to the Northern Rhone region in France, finds a new home where it awaits to be unearthed by the next critic who's lucky enough to grace their palate with this mind-blowing wine.
Aging: 14 months in French oak barrique.
100% Syrah. Hues of deep black fill the glass. Balsamic reduction and green peppercorns surge out of the glass followed by fresh blueberry, plum, tobacco leaf, and coco beans. The wine is dry, complex and the palate is driven by ripe dark fruits. A polished Italian take on N. Rhone darling, Syrah
Sicily and Syrah make for one of my favorite vinous couples. The 2016 Monreale Syrah La Monaca is a full-bodied red wine that is piled high with ripe fruit, Morello cherry, smoked bacon, chocolate, and tobacco. This is a fleshy, darkly concentrated red to pair with important meat dishes such as roast pork or lamb. It ages in barrique for 14 months. ~92 Robert Parker
