If you've been to Tuscany, you know magic imbues the air, land and wine. Owners of the famed Grand Cru Classe properties in Margaux, Ch. Giscours and Ch. du Tertre, were intoxicated by the potential of this property located south of Pisa and purchased it in 2003. After upgrading the property with feng shui inspiried new cellars, biodynamic farming, and a crew that included a winemaker with degrees from both Dijon and Bordeaux, Caiarossa was born. Named after the red earth (think Etruscan pottery) and the mother of all gods, Gaia, the top wine is a mystical blend of Bordeaux varietals, Sangio, etc.
As buyers, we see deals every day, but this one was too good to pass up. In this case, we have a relative newcomer to the market that changed hands a few times among importers. Then, after the 2010 vintage hit the market, the '09 and '07 vintages (very good in their own right), were passed over by consumers. The opportunity is that these are beasty wines that required additional bottle aging, and now they are stunning to drink. Note, this is the winery's flagship Caiarossa Caiarossa wine, not their lesser wines. Also worth noting, Bolgheri's famous Supertuscan estates are located a short 25km away, and WA rated the '09 vintage 97 pts. The '07 Tuscan vintage garnered a 97 pt rating for Brunello.
VM Tasting notes on the '09: "Here the aromas and flavors are quite dark, powerful and brooding. Black cherries, plums, mocha, tobacco and smoke all flow from this intense Tuscan red. All the elements are very much in place. The 2009 is Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Alicante." 93 pts
WS Tasting notes on the '07: "This ripe red shows finesse, offering bright cherry, strawberry and currant flavors backed by cohesive tannins. There's a hint of licorice and a salty tang, adding to its complexity. The finish is long and lingering. Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Alicante." 92 pts
