About the Wine

We cannot get enough of the 2016 Brunellos. Brunello is always a favorite, but 2016 is considered the best vintage for the region ever, and wine lovers and collectors are clamoring to fill their wine racks and cellars with these lauded Tuscan bottles.

The bottles from the 2016 vintage have been available for over a year now, and the longer they’re on the market, the scarcer they’ll become. We all know scarcity drives up the price, so NOW is the time to secure 2016 Brunello di Montalcino.

The Visconti Brunello is produced from vines that are 35 to 40 years old. The vineyard was certified organic in 2018. That means that in 2016 the vineyard was already farmed sustainability and organically, simply waiting for the certification that indicates Visconti has its eyes on the future.

Made from 100% Sangiovese, as is all Brunello, this is a full-bodied, fruity red that comes alive as it opens—so give it some time. Decant an hour at least, three hours is not unreasonable. This is common for Brunello, but what’s not common is this unbelievable price, one of the best we’ve seen from this vintage that’s wowing everyone.

Aging: 3.5 years in French oak cask

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Lots of cherry, plum, and vanilla on the nose. The fruit comes through on the palate with wonderful baking spices and a bit of minerality. Well-balanced with smooth tannins.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."

Reviews

It is radiant and essential and shows dark notes of black prunes, blackberries, fondant chocolate, and black cherries in alcohol. It is decisive and rich in character offering strength and precision of execution. Full-bodied, tannins of great quality and a tense, vibrant finale which tightens in the center palate. Better in 2022. ~94 Raffaele Vecchione
