About the Wine

“It has always been classed at the top of the second growths of Saint-Emilion. Exceptionally well maintained, it produces an average of 50 tonneaux of a delicate, soft, perfumed wine, perfectly preserved” wrote Edouard Féret of Badette in 1898. Certainly, much wine has flowed through the Chateau since then, but with the command of the new owner, the comments made in the 19th century perfectly apply to the wine of today!

The Estates vineyards are located next to Chateau Figeac and Troplong Mondot. The Chateau is under the guidance of the Belgian-born Marc-Andre Vandenbogaerde who aims to restore this Chateau to its former glory. Armed with an uncapped budget, the new regime has completely renovated the vineyards and Chateau. Marc-Andre has made it his mission to vault Chateau Badette back amongst the classified growths.

The 2022 Vieux Château Mazerat checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that saw the standard 80% new French oak. It’s a ripe, sexy, blockbuster-styled beauty offering lots of dark cherry and plum fruits, some obvious minerality, full-bodied richness, beautiful tannins, and some meaty, iron, tobacco-laced nuances. ~94-96 JD

Dense and polished with really fine and intense tannins with blackberries, chocolate and hazelnuts. Creamy and fine. Really polished and beautiful. Modern and pretty. Lots of tannins. ~94-95 JS

The 2022 Vieux Château Mazerat is a dark, virile wine. Black cherry, tobacco, espresso, incense, leather and sweet pipe tobacco open first. In 2022, Vieux Château Mazerat is quite aromatic, with layers of nuance that continue to open with time in the glass. Pliant and dynamic, Vieux Château Mazerat is very nicely done. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural breadth and textural intensity. ~92-94 AG-VM
