Once upon a vine in the picturesque Palatinate region, where rolling hills meet fertile soils and grapevines sway to the rhythm of nature, a story of passion and craftsmanship unfolds. Enter the 2020 Rings Spätburgunder Trocken—a Pinot Noir so elegant, it could moonlight as a ballroom dancer, yet grounded enough to remind you it’s made by people who dig their hands in the dirt (literally).

This is no ordinary wine. It’s the kind of Spätburgunder that knows its roots—deep, well-aerated, and treated like royalty with a touch of horse dung. Yes, you read that right. When nature calls, this vineyard answers with compost fit for a monarch. Buckwheat, radishes, and clover play supporting roles, attracting critters and enriching the soil like the unsung heroes they are.

When harvest time rolls around, it’s all hands-on deck. The Rings team handpicks every cluster with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker, sorting and destemming each grape as if auditioning for a starring role. Wild yeasts crash the fermentation party, bringing a spontaneous, lively character to the mix. And those tiny berries from French clones? They pack a punch, delivering structure and density like a heavyweight in a tailored suit.

Aging is where the magic deepens. For 12 months, this Spätburgunder hibernates in French barriques, resting and developing its silky, elegant persona. No fining, no filtration—because, frankly, this wine doesn’t need makeup to look good. The result? A glass of fresh, fruit-driven finesse that’s as exhilarating as a plot twist in your favorite novel.

The Rings family doesn’t just make wine; they craft stories in a bottle. Their organic farming practices are less about following trends and more about ensuring their soil and vines are healthy enough to outlive us all.

100% Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir).

Saumagen is a site that has found its harmony through its warm southern exposure and high-density planting of 12,000 vines per hectare (massal selection) on low-vigour rootstock. The result is always high concentration and pure fruit. In its youth, the wine’s fruit profile is still a bit Gamay-esque with raspberry, strawberry and red cherry underlain by violets and a hint of tobacco, just waiting to reveal further complexity. ~95 Decanter

For a basic-quality pinot noir this has a great cherry and blackberry nose. Full body with a creamy texture and enough acidity to keep it fresh and dry at the soft finish. Drink now. ~90 James Suckling
