Château Pavie Macquin isn’t just another Saint-Émilion estate—it’s a piece of history. Named after Albert Macquin, a pioneer in the world of viticulture, this chateau has roots deep in Bordeaux’s rich past. Macquin was the man who saved Bordeaux (and much of Europe) from the phylloxera epidemic by grafting vines onto rootstocks. Because of him, the vineyards you love still thrive today.

Fast forward to now, and Château Pavie Macquin is owned by the Corre family and Marie-Jacques Charpentier, who have steered this estate toward modern greatness. The real turning point came in the 1990s when famed consultants Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont joined the team, with the 1998 vintage marking a complete transformation. The wines became richer, deeper, and more expressive, putting Pavie Macquin on the map as one of the top names in Saint-Émilion.

At 15 hectares, this vineyard is no small player. The vines sit on the iconic limestone and clay soils of the Right Bank, right next to some of the region’s most legendary neighbors: Troplong Mondot, Pavie, and Trotte Vieille. It’s a mix of warm southern slopes and cooler northern patches that make for a perfect blend of terroirs.

The grapes? A masterful combination of 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, all organically grown. The vineyard is dense, with 6,600 to 8,888 vines per hectare, some of which are over 60 years old. Every vine counts here, with meticulous care given to replanting using the traditional selection massal technique, ensuring only the best vines thrive.

A very juicy and rounded young 2021 with berry, chocolate, cedar, balsamic, and redwood aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Velvety tannins. Excellent finish. Extremely well done for the vintage. 79% merlot, 19% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2028. ~96 James Suckling

There is a richness here, a powerful spread of black fruits, that grabs you from the start. Perhaps less razor precision than the Larcis Ducasse (also part of the Nicolas Thienpont stable) but more width and depth of flavour. This has texture and brambled power, sappy saline on the finish, touches of austerity, graphite laced through with grilled cassis and aniseed. Some reduction at this point, will clear over barrel ageing. Tasted several times, and each time the pumice stone and chalk of limestone grips on and will not let go. A yield of 31hl/ha. Drinking Window 2028 - 2044 ~95 Decanter

The 2021 Pavie Macquin is deep, bold and luscious, but within the smaller-scaled style of the year. It is an intensely aromatic, savory Grand Vin that emphasizes finesse more than sheer power. I admire its understated elegance more than anything else. Bright acids drive through a core of black cherry fruit, mocha, spice, new leather and licorice. This beautifully balanced, harmonious Saint-Emilion captures the essence of the vintage in style.Tasted two times. ~94+ Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Beautifully poised, dark ruby in colour, full of rippled fruit flavours, stands out in the appellation. It hasn't got miraculously riper than all the rest but it is handled with skill, and has a truly juicy mouthwatering finish and slate tannins that show grip and tenacity against the serious, austere structure. Expect raspberry, greengage and redcurrant fruits that need to fatten out a little over ageing, but everything is in place to do so. This is the plateau speaking. 37hl/h yield, harvest October 4 to 19, 50% new oak. Tasted twice. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

The 2021 Pavie Macquin offers up aromas of cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingled with mint, spices and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of fruit framed by chalky tannins that assert themselves on the comparatively structured, mineral finish, it's a strong effort. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Château Pavie Macquin is a beautiful wine in the vintage, bringing rock-solid concentration and depth as well as its hallmark purity and elegance. Cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, and violet notes define the aromatics, and it’s medium-bodied, has terrific mid-palate depth, fine tannins, and outstanding length. I love its purity, and it has classic Pavie Macquin character. This beauty will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following 15+ years. It's clearly a success in this vintage. The blend is 79% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, representing 80% of the total production, with roughly 4,600 cases produced. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

Deep dark ruby, purple hue at the rim. Fine noble wood notes, black forest berries, hints of liquorice, dark cherries and cedar. Complex, juicy, ripe plums, blackberry compote, striking freshness, integrated tannins, mineral, persistent, shows good length, surprisingly open; plenty of ageing potential. ~93 Falstaff

Ripe and generous in sensory profile, it shows sensory richness with notes of geraniums, red plums, strawberries, black cherries, sandalwood, incense, juniper berries and green mandarin peel. Medium-full body, soft tannins and a remarkably relaxed compound finish. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Best since 2026. ~93 WinesCritic.com

Though leaning to the light, trim aspect of the vintage, this reveals juicy energy behind the red currant and damson plum fruit notes, while red tea, sanguine and singed cedar accents score the finish. Nicely done. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036. ~92 Wine Spectator
