About the Wine

Etna DOC is located between Catania and Messina on the eastern coast of Sicily, very close to an active volcano named Mount Etna, a World UNESCO Heritage site. The terroir is out of this world, it features an incredible combination of fine ash, hardened lava, and sand. This results in extremely unique wines, which are the most genuine interpretation of Sicilian culture. If you want to learn more about this wonderful wine region, click here.

James Suckling once said, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are among the most delicate grapes in the world, producing world-class wines with power and finesse. If you have ever thought about an alternative that shows the beauty of both these grapes, Etna Rosso wines should be top of your list.” We agree Etna DOC is a hidden gem and a paradise for adventurous wine lovers.

Generazione Alessandro is the brainchild of three passionate cousins – Benedetto, Anna, and Benedetto. Yes, you read that right – two Benedettos, one Anna, and a single mission: to craft exceptional wines that sing the story of Sicily. These three, together with their fathers, represent the fourth generation of their family’s winery legacy in Palermo, blending their unique expertise in oenology, law, agronomics, and economics to create something truly special.

Nestled on the northeast slopes of the majestic Mt. Etna, their vineyards span about 10 hectares in the picturesque communes of Castiglione di Sicilia and Linguaglossa. Here, the land tells a tale of diversity – each plot of land, though close in proximity, boasts unique geomorphological and microclimatic characteristics, all lending their unique touch to the grapes.

The cousins farm sustainably, with terraces framed by dry stone walls and a mix of old and new vine plantings. The Alberello training system (think "little trees") ensures the vines get the best care, yielding grapes that are rich in character.

2020 Croceferro Etna Rosso is a masterclass in volcanic viticulture. Planted in 2016 on the north-east side of Mt. Etna at 640 meters (2000 ft) above sea level, the vines thrive in volcanic sand rich with red pumice stone. The result? A wine that exudes the very essence of its terroir – vibrant, complex, and utterly captivating.

Aging: 12 months in French oak tonneaux.

Tasting Notes: 100% Nerello Mascalese.

Reviews

Medium bright ruby red. On the nose there is a delicate scent of cranberries and rose hips as well as subtle herbal spices. On the palate there is an arc of balanced freshness and juiciness, a pleasant tannin structure and ending with saltiness in the long aftertaste. ~92 Falstaff
