About the Wine

Located in the scenic countryside, just northwest of Saint-Émilion, you'll find Château Chauvin. This winery isperfectly situated between the famous Cheval Blanc and the Butte de Rol, just a stone's throw from Pomerol. Here, the vineyards thrive in sandy clay soil, and iron-rich subsoil, very similar to that of the famous Pomerol vineyards. These soils, powerful grape varieties and deep respect for the local terroir are what drive the family at Château Chauvin tocraft wines that truly capture the soul of the land.

Château Chauvin's journey is nothing short of captivating. It all began in 1852 when Château Chauvin became separate from the larger Corbin estate, starting its own unique journey.

By 1891, the estate found itself in the hands ofVictor Ondet, who saw its potential as a serene countryside haven, transforming it into a thriving vineyard. However, it was in May 2014 that a new chapter unfolded for Château Chauvin when Sylvie Cazes and her children—Julie, Pierre, and François Régimbeau—stepped into the picture. They truly appreciated the land legacy for what it was. And so, embarked on an intense restructuring program, breathing new life into the vineyard, refining vineyard practices, and improving winemaking techniques. As the 2014 vintage marked the debut of this new label, it symbolized Château Chauvin's commitment to its cherished land.

Considering the wines are Gran Cru, there are specific rules Château Chauvin has to adhere to, only to ensure the highest quality is upheld. These regulations include limitations on how many bottles they can produce, ensuring grapes reach optimal ripeness before harvest, ensuring a minimum alcohol content, and ensuring extended aging periods before release. The result? Superb wines - including the 2018 Chateau Chauvin Saint-Emilion Grand Cru.

2018 was an amazing year for Bordeaux. “The wines tend to be rich in fruit, softer in mouthfeel with less tannin and acid,” writes Decanter. Vinous Media gave this vintage a stunning 96 Point review, stating, “The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.”

Aging: 16 months in barrels using 60% new oak.

Tasting notes:85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is rich and fruit-forward, yet silky and elegant. Expect notes of Dark plums, roasted coffee and baking spices, along with unique salt and chalky traits.

Reviews

Checking in as a mix of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 50% new oak, the 2018 Château Chauvin is a rich, powerful wine that clearly ranks with the finest wines from this address in the past decade or so. A dense purple hue is followed by awesome black raspberry and spiced cherry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, dried herbs, sandalwood, and tobacco. With full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins, it has some up-front appeal given its beautiful fruit and texture, yet it deserves 4-6 years in the cellar and will be a 20- to 25-year wine. Bravo! ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

Savoury and fragrant as with Folie de Chauvin, but here with accompanying depth and power. Raspberry and blueberry fruits on the attack giving way to richer raspberry purée and black cherry through the mid palate, all given a firm lift through the finish. Enjoyable with touches of graphite and liquorice-laced tannins. Deepened over ageing. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040 ~93 Decanter

Blackberries and cherries, violets, herbs and some ash character to this full-bodied St.-Emilion. Savory, chewy texture with tight tannins and a medium finish. Try after 2024. ~92 James Suckling

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Chauvin rolls effortlessly out of the glass with notions of spiced black plums, blackberry preserves and mulberries with hints of clove oil and incense. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers loads of juicy black fruit flavors with a soft texture and just enough freshness, finishing spicy. ~ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
