Yarra Yering is located in Victoria's stunning Yarra Valley. Founded in 1969 by the enigmatic Dr. Bailey Carrodus, this vineyard quickly became a beacon of quality and individuality, setting the stage for the region’s modern winemaking renaissance.

Wine production in the Yarra Valley dates back to the mid-1800s. However, the industry faced a prolonged hiatus from the 1920s, only to be revived by the pioneering efforts of Dr. Carrodus in 1969. Amidst iconic events of that year – from the moon landing to the first Woodstock festival – the establishment of Yarra Yering marked a new dawn for Australian viticulture.

Dr. Bailey Carrodus, a man of profound intellect and quiet humour, meticulously chose the Yarra Yering site for its ideal soil and climate. His deep understanding of viticulture led to the creation of exceptional wines that quickly garnered international acclaim. His dedication is mirrored in the simplicity of Yarra Yering’s label, allowing the wine's quality to speak volumes without the need for elaborate descriptions.

Yarra Yering’s success continues under the stewardship of passionate professionals. Andrew George, has over two decades of grape-growing experience, and Sarah Crowe, with experience in different top estates around the world, including Adelsheim and Ponzi Family Vineyards in Oregon, Paul Jaboulet Aîné in the Rhone Valley. She was awarded two-time “Winemaker of the Year” by James Halliday and scoring 99point wines by the same critic. Their combined expertise and love for the land yield wines that are both timeless and contemporary. The estate was awarded “Winery of the Year” in 2022.

Aging: 12 months; 50% in the 3500L three year old cask and 50% to French oak puncheons (500L); 10% new oak

100% Shiraz. Dark fruits and a little bit brooding mysteriously. Cool climate Shiraz; deliciously medium-bodied. Think charcuterie, graphite and a generous lick of aniseed spice. Blue and black plum fruits bring a fruit concentration to the palate along with some liquorice spice layering in structure and complexity. Some cured meat and a whisper of smoky-char interest driving the back palate. Medium-weighted and driven by fruit purity, oak just a faint background seasoning alongside a stalk grip interest.

~94 The Wine Front

Medium garnet in color, the 2012 Underhill Shiraz is a tad reticent at this youthful stage, offering glimmers of red fruit preserves notes plus underlying dried herb, Chinese five spice, pepper, and lavender hints. Medium-bodied, it has great expression and vibrancy though is just slightly lacking in generosity with a firm spine of chewy tannins and long, refreshing finish. ~Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
